Small town living at its best! - 11/10/2019
Natchitoches is a great small town in central Louisiana, with several claims to fame. It is the oldest permanent European settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, having been founded in 1714 by the French. In addition to all the history of the area (which also includes plantations, a Civil War campaign, and the Louisiana Maneuvers), Natchitoches is also famous for several movies filmed there, including John Wayne's "Horse Soldiers" and most famously, "Steel Magnolias".

Natchitoches has all the usual advantages of small southern towns, such as a fairly laid back way of doing things and extremely friendly population; and additionally the advantages of small Louisiana towns in particular, including excellent food and a rich culture.

With Northwestern State University located right in town, there is a mix of population including a large number of retirees brought in by the warm climate (not to mention frequent favorable reviews in magazines as a Read More

run away, far far away, fast as you can - 4/17/2019
I have been trapped here for 2 years........

This town is not a place to be if you aren't a college student or a rich retired snob. I worked in a field where I met a lot of people young to old and everyone said they hate this town. It is pretty to visit, it is nice to go to the Commissary to eat. THATS IT. They charge outrageous amounts for their festivals, I was told my dog wasn't allowed to go down to the riverbank during one of their events by a cop and when we were leaving we noticed a few dogs down there......

A 5th grader cut another with a box knife the day after I pulled my kids from their grade F school. If you are catholic, you can go to St. Mary's for about $5,000 per kid per semester and get a decent education. If you aren't catholic, that will cost you an extra $1000 because that is the religious thing to do.

Everyone is rude. The ladies in the utility office will roll their eyes at you. They also posted a passive aggressive note on Read More

Beware - 3/9/2012
On the surface, Natchitoches seems like a pretty town. The history of the city is quite interesting. But if you are thinking of moving here, don't do it! I've lived here for most of my life (28 years) and am finally looking to move. If you like ghetto and rednecks, this is the place for you! The schools are terrible! There is only one high school where the kids are treated like inmates because there are so many bad kids. my kids hated their high school years which is just sad. There are acres and acres of housing projects here. And there is absolutely nothing to do here. If you have kids they will hate Read More

Natchitoches is centrally located in the state, the Gulf region and the US.It is an equal drive for me to go to Key West or Tucson...Dallas and New Orleans are both 4 hours away... Pensacola, Memphis and Austin are all around 7 hours away...I am far enough from the coast to not worry about hurricanes, and far enough south not to own a snow shovel...I am an easy drive to any of the 400+ festivals in the state...But the very best part is when I don't go anywhere at all, because this town is drop dead charming with a myriad of good places to eat, and good local entertainment. The cost of living is low enough for me to enjoy all of Read More

Bottled water, history and low cost of living - 9/21/2009
Natchitoches is a gem in the upper Louisiana, Mississippi and East Texas area. It is a destination spot for the weekend for all 3 states and has a lively weekend festival schedule as well as a rich southern spanish, french, indian history. One of the few national historic registry downtown areas, this french/spanish river town is charming and one of the most beautiful in this country. Cost of living is very low, medical facilities accessible, and a university within walking distance (with one of the best gym's in the country). Restaurants are a challenge, though there is a new japanese restaurant in the center of town that is Read More

Charming, but don't drink the water. - 3/22/2007
Natchitoches is an ideal place to visit if you're looking for a sleepy weekend vacation. There are about 40 bed and breakfasts here. The downtown district, which basically consists of one street lined with boutiques and restaurants, is pleasant.

Attractions in Natchitoches include the Steel Magnolia house, the Natchitoches Christmas Festival, and...wait, no, that's about it.

Be warned: water quality in Natchitoches is well below par. Every three years or so, a letter is sent out to all Natchitoches residents that warns against drinking the water. There is some kind of chemical agent in it that can be very dangerous if you are exposed to it for a long period of time.

Visit Natchitoches. Don't move here.Read More
