Another user, Sarah P., who has lived in New Orleans for 3 years, describes the city as a "fantastic mix of old and new." She appreciates the historic architecture and the fact that there's always something new to discover, but she also mentions the high cost of living and the difficulty of finding affordable housing in certain neighborhoods.

Finally, Mark D., who has lived in New Orleans for over 20 years, praises the city's resilience and sense of community, especially in the face of natural disasters. He also mentions the city's vibrant nightlife and music scene as major draws. However, he also warns that the city can be challenging for those with allergies, as there are many pollen-producing trees and plants.

Great place to retire. - 12/12/2007
If you have the $ and like the funk, NOLA is a great place to retire. The colleges are excellent, the food is really good, the music scene is exciting, the architecture is exquisite, and the street cars are running again. I've done the NYC and CA thing, made enough $, and now enjoy working out at Tulane's gym, taking a course in the history of religion, eat out all the time, and when things get slow or I need a change, its off to South America. I have never seen any crime but like everwhere do know someone who was a victim before Katrina. Katrina was the best thing that ever happened to this place. A through cleansing. 99% of Murders in N.O. are Drug Related Gangs - 8/18/2007
The murder rate after Katrina went sky high due to Drug Gangs taking over new territory.
Tourists are pretty much safe as long as they stay in the right areas.
Do Not Stray. Remain in public places or take a taxi...it's cheap.
Do Not get too drunk to where you are out of control...That will make you an easy target for criminals. Do not leave your drink unattended.
These rules apply to everyone in every city. You never know who the Jeffrey Damah is until it's too late. Keep your hand over your drink and never leave it on the bar or table then come back and drink it.

The Major Crime Problems are within the System.
Elected Officials are so greedy they don't care about the residents until they are up for reelection.

I'm in Iraq and I feel safer than if I were in my - 7/7/2007
Facts:
New Orleans has the worst murder rate, education system, and crime of any other place in the U.S.

Why would anyone move there knowing this? You might ask yourself, "Then why do people live there?". The answer: Family ties and for the culture that once was.

Current Problem:
The Govenor and Mayor take most of the Katrina money and other state funds to put in their personal bank accounts and the bank accounts of their friends and family (I mean contractors, yea right).

They should be taking this opportunity to turn N.O. around. IF we did have elected officials who could work together and come up with a plan, it would STILL take years and years to straighten N.O. out.

Solution:
We have to replace of ALL the politicians and cops with people who care about N.O. but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Who in their right mind would want to clean up that mess? They would probably have an "accidental" Read More

The last two posts say it all - 6/18/2007
All you have to do is read the last two posts - although the spelling and punctuation in the one was so bad it was difficult to figure out what they were even trying to say - to see that the people who say that New Orleans is full of ignorant, nasty people are right on target. I hate it here, you all can see part of Read More

How Could You? - 6/11/2007
Well hello I agree with Kass completely. How are you just gonna talk about New Orleans and you don't know anything about it. I live on the westbank which is in the metro area of New Orleans I guess you can call it the outskirts or suburbs. But I really don't appreciate people talking about where I live because New Orleans and the surrounding areas are a very important spot in U.S. history. It is a great place to live. Of course we have a few roughspots but hey what place doesnt. We have our own type of food, music, style, and way of life. So when people who don't even live here try to talk about my city I get angry. They talkin bout ignorant if they keep talking about my city in a demeaning way I'm going to get ignorant. And act like I don't have any home training. And in response to the person who said New Orleans is bringing down some areas of Houston. I say forget them because when people come here to party on Bourbon Street and in New Orleans and cause havoc do you see the peole of Read More

u call it hell but i call it home - 6/5/2007
I came to find this website on mistake looking for realestate in my hometown of New Orleans. At first i wasnt going to leave a remark but after sum of the things ive read it makes me sad that sum people still are ignorant to what goes on here. Ill try to clear sum stuff up first thier is a lot of crime, but that is because the education system is one of the worst in the country. In saying that there are lots of parts of new orleans that have little to no crime at all. the bywater area, lake view, metarie are sum of the better parts. we have a culture like no other, the food, music, people are one of a kind. As a matter of fact ive been to other citys where people wont even speak to u in the morning, not in new orleans. people will ask how are u an not just that but "how ya mama an neem". new orleans is a great place to live. the private schools are the best. they teach u a since of pride and give u the best education and care about u as a student. some of the schools in other cites Read More

Just a big ole toilet bowl - 5/17/2007
What a dump to live in. It was bad in New Orleans before Katrina, but living there is much worse now. Although, Katrina did get rid of some of the run down housing that was there before. Spike Lee gets on TV talking about the poor Lower 9th Ward getting wiped out. That was one of the best things that could have happened to the city. I feel sorry for the people who really had no way of getting out of the city before the storm, but there were so many that just sat in their house with their Cadillacs, SUVs, etc., parked outside of their run down homes and then cried that nobody helped them when the water came up. Shows the stupid mentality of most of the people in New Orleans. They whine that nobody is rebuilding the city fast enough, while they sit in hotels paid for by FEMA, drinking and spending their FEMA money on designer clothes and strip clubs. Crime is going up in the city cause most of the criminals went to Tx and found out that in Tx, the judges actually put people in Read More

Wretched City - 5/16/2007
My husband and I went to New Orleans on vacation in 2003 - we left early. We went back just this month on our way to Texas and found that other than fewer residents, it really hasn't changed. A high percentage of the people are unbelieveably ignorant and low class, the crime is horrible... Just a very low-rent feel to the whole area, not even just New Orleans. I don't think it's a coincidence that Houston has begun suffering with a lot more problems since so many New Orleans residents moved there after Katrina - it says a lot when the people from one city are so low class that they drag down a whole 'nother area just by moving in. Urban blight and a lazy, nasty population at its Read More

NOLA (New Orleans, LA) has a reputation for being a place to drink and have fun. It's not a great place to live as the city's political leaders have for years been incompetent to manage the city. NOLA is also a good ol' boy town and you need to know that breaking in to this city is often dependent on who you are related Read More
