What BestPlaces Users Say about Bangor

Bangor, Maine is a small city located in the northeastern United States, known for its natural beauty and historic charm. With a population of around 33,000, Bangor offers a slower pace of life compared to larger cities, making it an attractive place to live for those seeking a quieter lifestyle. However, like any city, it has its own unique pros and cons that are often reflected in user reviews. Here's what some people have to say about living in Bangor, based on their personal experiences.

"Bangor is a great place to live if you enjoy outdoor activities and a close-knit community. The local parks and trails are beautiful and well-maintained, and there are plenty of festivals and events to attend. The people here are friendly and welcoming, and there's a real sense of community. However, the cost of living can be high, especially when it comes to housing. It can also be challenging to find job opportunities in certain industries." - Sarah M.

"I've lived in Bangor my whole life and I can't imagine living anywhere else. The city has a small-town feel with all the amenities of a bigger city. We have a great food scene, with lots of locally-owned restaurants and cafes. Plus, the downtown area is picturesque and full of charm. The only downside is the harsh winters, but the beautiful fall foliage and springtime blooms make up for it." - John D.

"I moved to Bangor for work and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The cost of living is much more affordable than where I came from, and there are plenty of job opportunities in various fields. The people are friendly and the schools are good. There are also some great local businesses and restaurants that add to the city's character. The only downside for me is the lack of diversity, but overall it's a great place to raise a family." - Maria L.

"Bangor is a pretty average city in my opinion. Nothing too exciting, but nothing too terrible either. The downtown area is nice, but there isn't much to do outside of that. The traffic can be a nightmare at certain times of the day, and the weather can be unpredictable. Overall, it's a decent place to live, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a top destination." - David P.

Best place I've ever lived - 9/21/2019
I have lived just outside of Bangor for four years. I came from the Seattle area and have lived in several states. I love it here. I have found people to be very friendly. Coming from the West Coast I was used to keeping a death grip on my purse and watching my back and I feel so safe here. There is so much beauty to see and much to do with a short drive. The cons would be there is little shopping, not nearly enough restaurants and no neighborhood pubs. Read More

A Very Sad Place With A Negative Outlook. - 9/15/2019
I have never lived anyplace and been as much of an outcast and a social pariah as I have been in Bangor ME. I have lived here for 4yrs. and have been met with contempt at every turn. Nothing I could have done would have won the respect of the people here. Racial and homophobic abuse are daily occurrences; rather I'm walking into the post office, the grocery store or catching a bus. Bullying and intimidation are the most common forms of communication. The majority of adults here do not possess any education beyond 8th or 12th grade, which would explain why most of them have the emotional maturity of prepubescent teenagers. The healthcare system is a disaster in terms of both, access and quality of care. Education is failing (and falling way behind), and retail, which is a dying industry, is the only industry to speak of. With an aggressive property crime rate, thriving drug epidemic, and rising violent crime, and a rapidly emerging homeless population; one would hardly reference Bangor Read More

BANGOR MAINE - 2/20/2018
My son came out to me picking him up from Mary Snow school and he was in a uncontrollable crying state of mind because of a teacher that RENDERED A SCREAMING FIT towards him. A meeting had to take place at Mary Snow with the Principle and the teacher and an apology was rendered to us from this teacher. My son was really shaken up.Why not render acknowledgement towards a teacher in way that they are put in the lime light. How about holding a Principle accountable when they have their little suttle ways of demeaning kids. Like when the Principle of Fruit Str school referred to my son as speedy because he was not able to keep up in a way because of his disability. In my opinion he should of been fired for that statement. How about the time also in Mary Snow that Dont'es name was spelled wrong by his teacher and he came home and confided in me about it. So I advised him to ask the teacher to change it and that would remedy it. Well he did just that.Did the teacher change it! Nope! So when Read More

Atrocious Bangor Maine - 2/20/2018
THERE IS MUCH TOXICITY IN THIS STATE! ADULTS HERE TEACH THEIR CHILDREN DISCRIMNATION,TO TREAT OUTSIDERS DIFFERENTLY! IF YOU WEREN'T BORN IN MAINE, YOU ARE NOTHING! IT'S NOT A GOOD PLACE TO RAISE CHILDREN! MAJOR DRUG ABUSE,MAJOR MENTAL ILLNESS,MAJOR GOOD OLE BOY POLITICS,MAJOR POVERTY,MAJOR OPPRESSION! MAJOR! MAJOR! POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! THEY THINK THEY GOT EVERYBODY FOOLED! ANOTHER EXAMPLE HOW THE EDUCATION SYSTEM HERE KEEPS DOWN THE AVERAGE OR DISADVANTAGED!!! MOST OF THE COUNTRY HAS A GPA SYSTEM IN PLACE THAT HAS BEEN THE STANDARD! MEANING THAT IF A STUDENT GETS A 70 ON A TEST IT WOULD RENDER A GRADE OF C AND IF A STUDENT RECEIVED AN 80 ON A TEST,IT WOUKLD BE A B. MOST STATES PRACTICE THAT SCORE SYSTEM! NOT BANGOR MAINE!!! IF A STUDENT GETS A 70 ON A TEST,IT RENDERS a D AND IF A STUDENT RECEIVED AN 80 ON A TEST,IT RENDERS A C !!!!!!!!!! So the average or disadvantaged that have a chance of getting on the HONOR ROLL is a little bit more attainable in these other states. NOT IN Read More

Decent place to live. - 1/4/2018
I moved to Bangor 3 years ago from the west coast and have mixed feelings. Here are some things I like and dislike about Bangor.

LIKES:
1. It's clean. The city as a whole does a good job of making everything look nice. There aren't any real rundown or filthy areas and there isn't much litter around as a whole.

2. There are a lot of trees and lakes in the area. We also have the Kenduskeag Stream which runs through the city. You also have the Penobscot River which is nice.

3. Crime isn't a real issue here. The murder rate is extremely low, and there aren't any real "bad" areas. There are a couple areas of town that have a higher concentration of homeless and people on drugs, but nothing to be afraid of. If you're from a bigger city, Bangor is far from dangerous.

4. Bangor is close to a lot of natural beauty. From the coast of Maine, Acadia National Park, and the woods of the County, you have a plentiful option of things to Read More

Liveing In Bangor Maine For 10 years where is the - 11/19/2010
Bangor Maine is a joke when it comes to police protection and homeland security. I have lived in this town in Maine for 10 long years and the Authoritys often just look the other way. what a joke for a town that had terrorists come through it and try to bye cell phones and then go on to crash planes into the twin towers in New York. If you ask me Bangor's whole ifastructure from the town officials to the police and other authoritys must be On The Take/Being payed off to look the other way so they can pocket some $$$$$$. Car torched after methadone clinic opened - 4/5/2009
Shortly after a meth clinic opened in Bangor, my station wagon was looted and burned in the middle of the night. I found drug needles on my front lawn. Maine ranks 47th in crime, but avoid the large cities. Bangor is a mecca for the poor and sick, having more services and facilities than any other place I've ever known. Unfortunately, that means cars get Read More
