4 season outdoor recreation - woo hoo! - 6/26/2009
Winter lake effect snow 200 inches average) and the hills and trails to go with it. Spring melt makes for great waterfall viewing, as well as river kayaking. Summer temps in the 70's and 80's with Lake Superior and hundreds of smaller lakes within a few minutes to a few hours drive - who needs AC? Bessemer Expenditures, College Attendance and Grad - 12/20/2008
I am the recent retired superintendent of the Bessemer Area Schools 12 of the past 17 years. We currently invest better than $7,300 per student per year. In addition there are a number of children who also receive funds from the State of Michigan and the federal government for being at risk. Overall we invest an average of some $7,900 per year per student in the education of our children. The average class size is under 18 K-12, with 33 teachers for our 464 students. Better than 94% of students entering the 9th grade graduate with the exception of those who move from the area during their normal four years in high school. Students attending two year, four year and trade schools are better than 80% of all graduates.

Little piece of heaven - 1/3/2008
I only lived in Bessemer, MI for one year, but I loved it there. If you love winter sports it's a paradise. It's a very small town so I think most of the local youth wants to get out to someplace bigger, but for me it was a little piece of "Norman Rockwell" heaven!

The town of Bessemer sits between three close by ski resorts (Big Powderhorn, BlackJack and Indian Head). Snowmobile trails are everywhere. It's cute and cozy and nice. Only minutes away from Lake Superior and forestland everywhere. An outdoorsman's paradise.

The winters are very cold and it gets pounded with snow (several hundred inches) from the lake effect.

For a small town it has plenty of places to eat out, a movie theatre, a nice community college near by and all sorts of other stuff. I really loved it there and would move back in a second, but my wife is not a fan of the cold or real small towns without Read More
