Thorough, balanced report on Detroit... - 4/26/2006
Detroit is like a doughnut...lots of good stuff on the outside with a giant hole in the middle.
I've lived in the city (West side: Joy rd & Greenfield), and outside the city (Redford, Southfield, Sterling Heights, and now Macomb Twp.)for almost 30 years. The current existence of Detroit is dependent on the suburban areas, so I'll generalize them as well.
Detroit proper relies on the auto industry alone. There is no other significant industry within the city. The recent auto company cutbacks are making jobs tight. Many people are looking for jobs. If you have specialized education in a field, you'll be alright. But, don't come here expecting to just find a job.
The city has gone through years of corrupt gov. officials who win over the voters, then rob them blind. In addition, they have been resistant to working with the suburbs in any combined effort to revitalize the dying downtown. Likewise, the suburban city officials have had no real reason to join

Why in hell would you want to live here? - 4/19/2006
Been living here for 37yrs and let me tell you it keeps getting crappier as time goes on. Yeah Detroit has more new houses then any other place in the country, but that's because the builders are getting tax abatements for 7-12 years. That means the rest of the homeowners are footing the bill for property taxes and city services while a few are getting a free ride. Unemployment rate is 16% and this is the poorest city in the county and will problemly stay that way for the next ten years. The police show up two-three hours after you call them and don't even want to take a police report! The homeless is a MAJOR problem here and the city refuses to do anything to help or solve the matter. So from downtown to WSU Campus you will have at least ten people beg you for change or trying to con or rob you.
Mass transit? What's that? The city has the second worst bus service in the country! And the buses don't go where the jobs are funny enough. Well I am moving and won't be coming

RUN LIKE HELL. Not a place for anyone esp. interra - 4/13/2006
I moved away from Detroit last year. I survived hurricane Katrina in my new town Biloxi Mississippi and it was TEN times better than living in Detroit. Just in 2005 I had my car stolen 2 times within 87 days right out of my driveway. I am in an interracial marriage and I have NEVER seen so much racisim in my life. Trust me, there is no diversity there. I witnessed much of what someone else mentioned, police shooting dogs, drug deals, toxic waste, just plain CRIME. Lets not forget to mention the high property taxes and insurance rate hikes just for living in Detroit. It is like a punishment or something. How about the fact that there is a liquor store on every corner. Lets not argue over the facts Detroit is not a good place to live for anyone, Well maybe for the Mayor, he seems to be doing

Oh the ignorance!! - 4/12/2006
Typical racist garbage from an ill-informed person. I suggest you read about things before you make blanket statements. I am a graduate student studying race relations and social policy and I can tell you that white flight and the problems associated with it are not because crime was already too high. It started in the years immediately following World War 2 when crime was vastly lower than now. Crime rates only began to explode in the mid-1960s. By that time, whites, using a gigantic Affirmative Action program for white people called FHA low interest home loans, had already moved out in waves. These loans and the investment money along with them were only given to those building new houses in the suburbs, while black neighborhoods were denied loans in a process called "redlining" and were kept out of white suburbs by a process called "exclusionary zoning." By the time crime rates began to explode, black neighborhoods had been completely abandoned by investment, jobs (most

Finally, the truth! - 4/5/2006
Finally someone speaks the truth about Detroit. Bravo, Jackie. I am so sick and tired of people sticking their head in the sand, and saying "Its the white man..." or, "If only the schools received better funding...." or "It's the poverty that causes the crime...." Look at West Virginia, 95% White, 2nd poorest state in the US, 48th lowest crime rate. Enough said. Its not poverty or schooling. When white flight occurs, DUE TO CRIME, the area falls apart. Example where I live: Asbury Park, NJ. 1950's its as white as Wonder Bread, no crime, good schools, lively economy. A bustling Jersey Shore town. 1970-2000, white flight occurs, now its a war zone. Drugs, shootings, rape, robbery etc, all rampant, even during the day. Now in 2006, its making a comeback because whites are moving in and gentrifying the bad areas. Its almost liveable now. As a white man, I am sick and tired of being blamed for all the ills of

Stay away... the only thing good is the Red Wings! - 4/2/2006
Detroit stinks! At one time, many decades ago it was a beautiful thriving city. Then the negros moved in and Detroit experienced what is called "white flight" where all the white people fled to the suburbs to get away from them. The blacks now comprise about 80% of the population and have tore the city up. It's filled with drugs, crime, burned down houses and buildings, etc. It's a horrible place now. They have ruined the city and it will never return to what it once was.
The only thing good is the Detroit Red Wings and the Hockeytown Cafe. Take the freeway, get off to go to those places and get back on the freeway and head for the suburbs as fast as you can. They will rob you, rape you, kill you, etc. It's filled with uneducated criminals.
If you want a nice place in the Detroit area move to Troy.
P.S. Someone said that the Piston's were the good thing about Detroit. CORRECTION...they don't play there. They play 30 miles away in Auburn Hills!
