What BestPlaces Users Say about Springfield

Springfield, Missouri is a city located in the southwestern region of the state. It is known for its rich history and cultural attractions, including the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and the Dickerson Park Zoo. With a population of over 167,000 people, Springfield offers a diverse community with a variety of neighborhoods and amenities. However, as with any place, there are pros and cons to living in this city. Here are some user reviews from BestPlaces.net that reflect the experiences of individuals living in Springfield, Missouri.

According to user "Sara" who moved to Springfield from Texas, "Springfield has truly become my home. The people here are genuine and kind, always willing to lend a helping hand. The cost of living is affordable and there are plenty of job opportunities in various industries." This highlights the welcoming and affordable nature of the city, as well as the availability of employment opportunities.

On the other hand, user "John" has a different perspective. He writes, "The traffic in Springfield is horrendous. The roads are poorly planned and constantly congested. It can take me over an hour to get to work, which is only 15 miles away." This shows the downside of living in a growing city, where traffic and road infrastructure may not be able to keep up with the increasing population.

User "Jane" shares a positive experience, stating, "I love the weather in Springfield. Summers are just hot enough and winters are mild. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy all year round." This showcases the favorable climate and opportunities for outdoor recreation in Springfield.

However, not everyone is satisfied with the weather. As user "Mark" expresses, "I hate the humidity in Springfield. It's unbearable and makes it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities in the summer. I would much rather live in a drier climate." This highlights the personal preference aspect of living in Springfield and the trade-offs that come with it.

Overall, the user reviews on BestPlaces.net showcase a mix of positive and negative aspects of living in Springfield, Missouri. From the welcoming community and affordable cost of living to the traffic and climate, it is clear that the city has its strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to weigh these factors and decide if Springfield is the right place for them to call home.

One must be prepared for the "buckle of the biblebelt". This is truly it. If one is a WASP this is heaven on earth. If one is in the least bit liberal you will not fit in Read More

Mayberry USA? - 5/14/2009
Springfield's biggest advantage over larger cities is the low cost of living. However, it offers very few decent paying jobs so it balances out in the end.

The South side is the more desirable area and offers average recreational activities, but several lakes nearby offer more.

Traffic is nonexistant for the most part, but may seem worse at times since there is only two expressways.

Crime (minor) is prevalent in the north and central parts of Springfield along with Meth use throughout the city neighborhoods (rich & poor). good ole midwest values!

Weather is good and bad and is really bad with a long history of tornadic acitivity in the area. Four seasons offer a change every three months.

If you do not mind mediocre schools and little to no diversity or cultural events and a narrow perspective of life (guns & relgiion rule here). Then this is the place for Read More

practically cultureless - 2/15/2009
I am 28 years old and am getting ready to move away from Springfield with my husband and son. We moved to KC for a while (where people were SO much friendlier!) but moved back for family. I have tried to make the best of Springfield but have to admit it can't be done; at least not for us. We will not raise our son in a place so deprived of culture and diversity. Springfield is best described as; Church, Chinese restaurant, Wal-Mart, Strip club/pornography store. The "downtown revitalization" project is a joke considering the current economy, and anyway, about 50% of south-siders are still afraid to come downtown. It's a shame they are so afraid of the practically non-existant black population, although they wouldn't admit that's why they stay away. The help that might come in the form of colleges does not improve springfield because most of them cater to the ultra religious or semi-affluent. So, no cultural diversity or progressive mindset there. The local (and only) museum is a Read More

Move here only if you are financially well off. - 1/28/2009
The Springfield/Branson area has some positive points - the fishing/outdoors (spring/summer/fall that is)and relatively low cost of living. The downside of all that is that you'd have to search far and wide to find an area of the US where the average pay is as low as here. I'm talking almost 3rd world levels. People expect you to exist on minimum wage regardless of whether you posses a college degree or not. I spent my college years there and since the economy was bad, a few years after as well. Even people I knew with years of experience and a University degree were being lowballed with $20,000 a year gigs.
The mentality is definitely small town, and thats not always a bad thing except of course when you are asking your employer for a raise or see fit to complain in any manner about the place on our little green planet that they have come to think of as their little Utopia.
The only people I knew that moved here and are happy are the ones who came in with money - Read More

If your looking for excitement: DO NOT MOVE HERE.
Shopping: I hope you like walmart.
Downtown is neat with the few vintage shops and there are a few places you can rent a loft. There are several places you can find local bands if your younger but other than that it's Lame-ville. I can't wait to get out of this place. If your looking to raise a family then Id say it's a good place but only for that. Branson, Missouri (about 30 mins away, driving) is a hick-town but Silver Dollar City (little amusment park type place) is definitely worth a visit. Also, theres lots of shows there in Branson. I personally don't care much for living here, I want to move somewhere with better Read More

Great place to live! - 12/7/2008
I've lived here in Springfield for the past six years, and while I've read mostly negative posts about Springfield on this site, I must say that I absolutely love it here! I'm from a much smaller town, and have found Springfield to be the perfect balance between country and city life. It has just about all the amenities you could want in a small area - about a 40 minute drive max from one side of the city to the other. The people for the most part are friendly and courteous (despite what other posts have said, most people here are no more over-religious than other towns in Missouri and aren't going to try to force their religious or political views on you). The cost of living is extremely low, and housing prices are well below the national average. (We just bought our first home - a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, all brick home in a nice neighborhood for only $95,000!!) There are many colleges and universities in Springfield, and despite the current economic crisis, the job Read More

Springfield is a wonderful place to live. - 10/6/2008
I was born and raised here and have watched this "town" grow into a wonderful midsized city. There are several well know university's, technical schools, and the public school system is one of the best. Sports are big in Springfield. The St. Louis Cardinals along with the city built a beautiful double A stadium where their double a team plays. We've seen many of the regular cardinals going through rehab play here as well as our own players make it to the big leagues. There are ice skating, indoor and our door tennis, and many golf courses to use. I'm sure I'm fogetting something. Basketball is huge when the universities start their season. A new arena will open this fall for the Lady and Men Bears from Missouri State to use. Their kick-off concert is the Eagles playing Nov. 13,2008. Tickets sold out in a few hours. The Arts are growing also, There is the Springfield Symphony ,Ballet, paintings and sculpture at the Art Museum, the Art Walk downtown where restarants hang local artists Read More

Extremes - 8/11/2008
The weather in Springfield varies from one extreme end to the other. The summers are hot, with temperatures consistently hitting 100+ July - September, and 100% humidity. Prepare for lots of tornadoes and flash floods through spring and summer. Fall is beautiful, but it only lasts a few short weeks, and then the bitter cold of winter sets in. Lately there hasn't been a lot of snow, but ice instead. The great ice storm of 2007 was record setting, but there is always a great deal of ice and frigid temperatures through out the Read More

Family-friendly, nice people - 4/24/2008
Like any Midwestern town, Springfield is full of friendly people and is a great place to raise kids. It's safe, and cost of living is pretty low. But pay is low compared to other cities in the region. The climate is ever-changing, so if you don't like the weather, just wait a day or two. It will completely flip. If you're in the healthcare field, there are two large hospitals so you will likely find a good job. From what I've heard, the schools here are so-so. As part of the bible-belt, Springfield is home to some extreme religious groups. You can't go downtown on a Saturday night without running into protestors with signs reading "The Party Ends In Hell". No kidding. Nothing ruins a fun evening out like strangers shoving religion down your throat. I'm Christian, but if I wanted a lecture on the Ten Commandments, I'd go to church, not outside of a bar. If you're liberal, you may feel out of place. The majority of people here are pretty conservative. After living here for 4 years, I've Read More
