A Returning Native - 7/14/2009
I returned to St. Louis (where I grew up) in 2002, after living in Los Angeles for twenty years. I'm delighted to see the City's resurgence--the renovation of its historic neighborhoods, the enhancement of its public spaces, and the sustained excellence of its arts and entertainment communities. What it lacks in depth and breadth of cultural facilities is made up in the accessibility and quality of what's here.
I still live in both LA and St. Louis, and both are wonderful in their own way. I suspect that as I age, St. Louis's more "bite-size" world will have the greater

St. Louis, MidAmerica - 5/27/2009
Hello,
my name is Nick, and I am from good ole St. Louis, the city also known as the Gateway to the West. I am considering moving to another place, as I am tired of this one. I have been living here most of my 24 years and want to be in a more tolerant and open-minded culture. St. Louis is not exactly an artist's haven, and I am an artist wanting to pursue my songwriting in a community where it is easier to do so. Forgive me if my opinion sounds biased... maybe I am just bored.
Parts of the metropolitan area are ok, places like Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton & Brentwood, which are kind of halfway between the city, which is where I live and consider to be pretty rough, and the upscale, 95% white suburbs on the fringes of the metro area. If you are planning on moving to StL and can afford it, these are the areas I like most and would recommend... for what it's worth.

The gateway to confusion - 5/18/2009
I never liked living here. The city has the most strangest layout ever. Ive gotten lost so many times and people are so rude here. Overall St louis just seems to be a mixed up city. Its a city where people behave like southerners but yet want to live on the east coast because most of the city has old historic homes arranged like eastern

In the past 5 to 7 years the city has changed greatly. There is a lot more ethnic variety within the the city's southside and downtown areas. Unfortunately this has caused a state of economic cleansing amoung the Black population who can no longer afford to occupy and shop in the new developments being geared toward the more affuent groups of

The Gateway City: It Could Use a Shot in the Arm - 8/7/2008
I have lived in St. Louis for some 20 years now. My wife and I did something a bit foolish: We moved up here without jobs. I had just lost my job in Houston, and we didn't want to raise the kids there because of the pace of living, the sprawl, and the crime. So, we moved here. As a pharmacist, she was able to get a job very quickly. I'm in public relations and I had to struggle to find decent work.
The good: Great place to raise children, good selection of public and private schools, a fair amount of artistic offerings for a city of its size, and, generally speaking, a small-town approach to life. Weather-wise, there are usually four seasons. Summers can be hot and muggy, but there are occasional respites from the humidity. Winters are cold, but St. Louis rarely sees the kind of snow that, say, Chicago does.
The bad: Hands down, the economy here is mediocre at best. Very simply, there is a lack of ambition and initiative; job growth is anemic at best.

Pretty decent mid-west city - 7/6/2008
I lived in Cincinnati for a while and I'd say St. Louis is pretty comparable to that. Nothing extraordinary but it's a good place to be if your in a health care profession. Barnes-Jewish hospital is here and is considered one of the top ten research hospitals in the country. The traffic can be jacked-up at times especially since the state temporarily closed one of the main interstates through the city (Route 40). As far as public transportation is concerned, the bus system covers pretty much the entire St. Louis County. There is an electric metro-train system which services most of the major destinations in the city, along with the north county area, including the airport. The train also extends quite a bit into eastern Illinois, but is unfortunately lacking on the west end of STL.
I wouldn't say housing is cheap here unless you want to live in the ghetto (East STL), but it's well worth it to pay a little extra to be in a safe area. I just recommend doing your homework and
