Dirt Cheap to live here - 11/28/2007
I lived in St. Louis for one year before moving to Chicago. St. Louis isn't a terrible place to live, but I found it to be kind of an bland, ugly city. Unless you love professional sports, there isn't a whole lot to do here. It's cheap to live here, because like most Midwest cities, there isn't a ton of people flocking to move here. I like a little more diversity and action in my cities, likely why Chicago is a better fit for Read More

St. Louis native...got out as soon as I could - 11/3/2007
I wish my home town was a fantastic place to live, it's beautiful and full of history, but it's not so great. I graduated from St Louis University and when I was there it was rated the most dangerous college campus in the country based upon surrounding crime statistics. The crime rate is no joke and it's been bad for a very long time. The city is totally segregated and the people are generally pretty small minded and short sighted. I don't see the problem being solved any time soon. That being said, the county is so safe I know a lot of people who don't lock their doors. St. Louis city and St. Louis county are two very diferent places. (one has black people and one doesn't,you guess which it is...one has a fantastic public school system and one doesn't...one has etc. etc.)

It is one of the largest Catholic diocese in the country and conservative Catholic values really color the local thinking. It's a hard place to live if your ideas or values are outside of the Read More

St. Louis City - 10/19/2007
I've moved into the city from the suburbs in February 2007 because I'm a city person. And I'm just beginning to get to know the city. So far I really like Read More

a under-rated city and region - 10/18/2007
The Saint Louis 'city' limits are crazy small compared to almost all other large cities which has destroyed St. Louis statistically (crime). Which is unfortunate because it is a surprisingly large metropolitan area (2.8 million, verses the 340,000 in the 'city' limits) and has the normal good and bad areas. Many of it's best urban neighborhoods are 5 and 6 miles from downtown and not included in the "city" but would be in almost any other city. On the other hand North City IS quite horrible and almost by itself pulls St. Louis crime stats in the toilet and through the floor. There is a lot to do with good culture and night life but you have to look for it a little more than some other cities because it is more spread out in neighborhoods rather than in one centralized downtown. I have lived in numerous cities and traveled a lot and overall have really enjoyed my time here. Plus it's getting better all the time. For neighborhoods I'd recommend Lafayette Square, Soulard, Central Read More

Believe the reports, crime is really that bad - 7/15/2007
I've lived in St. Louis city, north of Forest Park, for 5 years and in two apartments...both in supposedly respectable neighborhoods. In that time, I've two car windows smashed, nearly walked through a shootout on the street, and routinely alter my daily routine so I don't have to walk home in the dark. My girlfriend had her apartment burglarized and sacked, car window smashed, and is routinely harassed on her walk to the Metro (probably 3 of 5 week days). I don't know ANYONE who's lived here for an extended time and not had a window smashed. Property crime is a matter of fact. Kids from the poorer neighborhoods to the north play "throw a rock and run" like I used to play capture the flag. The threat of violent crime and assault is always present.

Before some igonoramus objects and says "if you live in a city, you have to be smart and careful, and you'll be fine"...let me say that I've lived in Chicago and San Francisco, and neither the bums of Chicago nor the Read More

St. Louis the city that lives in the past - 6/30/2007
Have lived in St. Louis for over 3 years now and am looking forward to leaving. My best friends here are all from out-of-state; the locals just don't seem interested in trying to make new friends. Sure there is plenty do to in and around the city but the point is the people.

I attribute this to the lack of new people coming into the area. St. Louis is a net exporter of companies. They have their solid core of companies but they are regularly acquired and closed up. This leaves small companies that want to hire locally. Granted the people from St. Louis never want to leave so someone must like Read More

Not the worst place but definitely leaves much to - 5/16/2007
I am a native of southern Il which borders St. Louis. Born and raised here and never lived anywhere else until i went off to college in chicago. One thing i can say, if you ever leave and see something else, you will not desire coming back. Where as the area will always be home, I am in a quest to leave in the next year. It's economy is horrible for educated people. It doesn't even matter about your color, the economy is just horrible. I am a black professional accountant with an MBA and I work with other professionals with MBA and we make less than i made on my first job after undergraduate degree. The city is more of a place that you settle into or get stuck into. The benefits on the job are great but pay is low and if you have a family and want to afford them better opportunities than maybe you were able to have as a child or you just want to start paying off some bills like student loans, this is not the place for you. Trust me the job market sucks!!!!!!!!!! I'm not Read More

Though St. Louis is certainly no Mecca of culture, it does provide the community with a beautiful city park of over a 1,000 acres, full of bike paths and trails, a wonderful zoo, a history museum, and an art museum--all for free! No one will mistake the city's art and music scene with that of New York or Seattle, but it does provide most of the basics on a smaller scale. It's no place to become an artist, but it's a fine place for a Read More
