A Wonderful City - 4/17/2007
St Louis is something that you have to get used to. It is gritty like Milwaukee. It's old and the downtown is not an area that is used except for events, so disreguard the previous comments. There are incredible areas like the West End where you can walk, shop, eat and go in great bars just to meet up with friends. Fantastic martinini and wine bars. You can't get better food. You just need to know the places to go. Saucemagazine.com is a complete guide to dining in the city and sub.

The cost of living is very affordable. You can spend under $130,000 and get a great house in a safe area of the city. St Louis loves there sports, but that is a very small part of the city. You can find hundreds of bands playing by looking in the right place. St Louis is very open to diverse lifestyles. I have noticed very little prejudice in the city. I can not say the same for the county.

Overall, St Louis is wonderful. It is very old-school. The people are kind, employment is Read More

You'll either love it or you'll hate it! - 1/5/2007
Take if from me as a native St. Louisan; There are two kinds of people in St. Louis: Those who love it and will never ever leave, and those who hate it and would do anything to get away. There's no middle ground. There have been a great many famous St. Louisans, like Vincent Price, Josephine Baker, Joe Torre, Cedric the Entertainer, etc. Every last one of them left and never looked back, and with good reason. If you're in the group that wants to leave, it can be next to impossible to get out.

Depending on how you look at it, St. Louis is either a middle-American paradise or hell on Earth. It's a beautiful but extremely conservative and religious city with delightful suburbs for raising kids, excellent schools (in places), a church every couple of blocks and wonderful parks and recreation areas. But it is the quintessential Bible-belt, middle-American, midwestern, white bread city. It's also got more low-paying, dead-end, glass-ceiling jobs than anyplace I've ever lived Read More

St. Louis, the big small town. - 12/29/2006
St. Louis is a city of wide tree-lined boulevards in old neighborhoods that are based on a rich city history and a diverse immigrant population. An active business climate and relatively small population (2 million in the SMSA) means that one gets to know a lot of people in a fairly short period of time. Public schools are generally strong, with the notable exception of those in the city, which are not. Churches are an important part of the life style here with large Catholic and Jewish populations that date to the French fur traders who were the original settlers, and more recent immigration from Europe (particularly Russia). There is also a mix of Protestant churches that are fairly typical of midwest metropolitan areas. The metropolitan area and its people are firmly rooted in the midwest, but "look east" more than west. However, being located in the demographic center of the nation, the cultural mix of the South, rural Missouri and Arkansas, and Chicago are evident.

Neutral (Overall rating of Saint Louis) - 12/18/2006
I have lived in St. Louis my entire life and overall I would have to say that this city is a pretty good place to be. Education: There are plenty of colleges here to choose from ranging from top notch (top dollar) universities to the state colleges at affordable prices which in my opinion have high quality education as well. Culture: Very diverse. There are a lot of things here to entertain you, something for every type of interest from the arts, music, sports you name it. My favorite place in St. Louis is the Delmar Loop, an area with diverse restaurants, specialty shops, clubs, etc., nothing common about any of them. It’s a very eccentric, cool, funky place to hang out. Crime: Recent reports claim St. Louis City has the highest crime, personally I don’t believe it. However, I have lived in St. Louis County suburban areas my entire adult life, so I may just be unaware of what happens in the inner city.

Here is where I go neutral… Even though this city has great Read More

I don't understand people who love St. Louis... - 12/11/2006
I've lived here for 13 years - originally from the Northwest. Most people I know who love St. Louis are people who haven't lived anywhere else but Missouri. This is one of the ugliest cities in America. Crime is rampant. The highways are in major disrepair. Traffic is horrible. The commute from the suburbs is totally depressing, because all you see is strip malls, strip malls, and more strip malls. St. Louis is way behind other cities who have put a priority on renewing their downtowns. Every region of the U.S. has its own "culture", and the culture here is weird. St. Louisans are just happy to go to the mall, sports events, and work in their yards, because they don't know what else to do here. There are no scenic safe biking paths, no hiking trails, and there is no pretty and vibrant downtown - just malls. The parks are nothing special. What's so awesome about the St. Louis Zoo? The cool cafes/restaurants/music scene may exist, but it's all so spread apart. There's no actual one Read More

Good and bad about St. Louis - 11/25/2006
Good: There is a nice Forest Park, with a zoo, museum etc. - everything for free and good nevertheless. A lot of things to do, live in the nice Delmar Loop area. A lot of good food, Asian especially. Very international due to Washington University, open minded. Public transportation is getting better.
The weather is a little bit too hot in the summer, but nice in spring and fall. I don't like snow and winter, but we do not have too much of it. People are friendly and diverse.

Bad: #1 Be careful where you live!!! There are really, REALLY bad areas, you don't even want to pass by. Crime rate is highest in the country (but it also depends, where you are living. Feel pretty save here in the Loop area).
Air pollution is also a problem. I feel like I am getting sick from that and it is one of the reasons for me wanting to move out of here. Besides from missing the mountains... :-)

Getting better: The downtown/Mississippi area. There are some plans out Read More

Inter- racial marriage - 11/6/2006
I am a city girl born and raised in the south west. I am inter- racially married with four children. We were looking at springfield or surrounding areas. Is there any city out there that is more accepting of the racial thing? Maybe another state with cheap housing and beautiful scenery! We are christians so that part does not bother us but is there any inter-racial marriages there? I too want a safe place to raise my children. I want a lot of land or a ranch house or something any Read More

No Jobs in St Louis - 10/11/2006
I moved to St Louis because my husband transferred. I have a competitive resume with an international background. I have been looking for a job for 5 months, dedicating 1-2 hrs per day, I have posted my resume to about 60 companies, and attended 4 job fairs. There are 4 recruiting agencies "helping" me with ZERO results! not even one single interview.
There are no jobs in St Louis. The city is beautiful, people is nice, weather is not as bad as farther north, but if you are not a nurse or a doctor you will not find a job!
Not only that, your email will get a lot of spam because of so many people trying to take advantage, they invite you to explain a "job opportunity" and when you show up they ask you to pay to start! nice eh??.. It is such a horrible job market and people takes advantage of those trying to find a decent opportunity!
It is sad to say that when my husband moved we were still dating, we did not dedicate enough time to read about the job market, he had Read More

Nice Place to Live Except for Climate - 7/10/2006
I have lived in St. Louis for 20 years. St. Louis has a lot to offer: culture, professional sports, wonderful universities, top hospitals, and is a haven of middle-class values. It is a great place to raise a family. Housing prices are affordable compared to other parts of the country. On the flip side, crime rates are high in certain parts of the city and county. Traffic is not bad considering other areas, but there is endless contruction going on. The worse condition has to be the weather. Summers are hot and humid and go on into September some years. The last several winters have been very mild with very little Read More
