Pros:
1. Low crime rate
2. Low cost of housing
3. Home to the University of Nebraska and the state government

Cons:
1. Not much to do

3. There's not enough data on the school system, so I don't know if it's good or Read More

middle-of the road downtown, many very run-down ne - 11/12/2007
I moved to Lincoln just over a year ago and overall I am not impressed with the city at all.

The infrastructure for a city of its size (around 240,000 people) is awful. Many of the roads have potholes that are not patched for along time, are in great need of repair and the traffic backups are incredible for such a sized city because of the horrific road infrastructure. The city has a very run-down library downtown, the city auditorium is from the 50s and is totally unacceptable for a city of its size. Also, Lincoln has a moderate violent crime rate which is higher then the national average. Most neighborhoods are fairly safe, but they have some very, very high violent crime neighborhoods in the center neighborhoods that cause it to be a high violent crime rate city overall.

Downtown Lincoln has quite a few coffee shops, restaurants and bars. They have alot of assaults in the downtown area however. It is a fairly dangerous neighborhood especially on Thursday Read More

lincoln is stink'n - 10/6/2007
i lived in lincoln for a couple years and did not care for it. the cops there suck you can be walking at night and a cop will pull you over to see what you are doing. they also like to drive up on your bumper behind you to get ready to pull you over for something stupid. hey if you like staunch cops and a city that likes to live in a police state, than lincoln and nebraska is the state for you.. No HUSkERS Read More

Quality of Life - 7/27/2007
With the University of Nebraska located downtown, restaurants, bars, theaters, and playhouses are plentiful. Lincoln is a nice size at around 200,000, but is growing rapidly. With Omaha only 45 minutes away and Kansas City a 3 hour drive, access to big city amenites is not far away.

The climate can be exteme at both ends. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cold and Read More

Lincoln, NE In some cases, dull is good. - 7/10/2007
People tend to make jokes about this part of the US. While dull may not be a good personality trait, it has some positive aspects for a city. It is relatively quiet here. Crime is relatively low. Lincoln is a good place to raise children. The quality of the schools are very good. Each neighborhood has a nice park. It is easy to get around town, especially when compared to larger urban areas on the east and west coasts. There are enough cultural activities to keep one busy during the week and on weekends. The Ross Film Theater shows first rate foreign and art house films. The Lied Center for the Performing Arts draws good crowds with a variety of different shows appealing to a broad range of people. Lots of good restaurants. Life is easy Read More

Trying to get out of Lincoln - 4/7/2007
It's true, Lincoln is somewhat of a clean place to live, and there are some nice people here, and there is even a good mix of diversity to boot, however, if you are a minority and not in the "upper class" you will feel it. The city is friendly only to those who are of higher income, and you will feel many prejudices if you are a minority. Many racial slurs are still used by the older generation here, and has trickled down to the family they leave behind. The taxes here are outrageous, but they do have a good school system. The average cost of a house is also decent, but you aren't going to get the greatest in quality. The crime rate has gotten out of control because of all the meth heads that live in this town, so be prepared to have your radio stolen out of your car if you don't have a garage to store it in. Then there's the snow! While the city tries to stay on top of plowing the snow in the neighborhoods, the poorer areas, such as downtown get screwed. This town is not Read More

Many choices - 3/21/2007
The University of Nebraska offers a very good education at a resonable price (as compared to other universities). Wesleyan is a smaller liberal arts college that is very good. Southeast Community College offers vocational training (associate degrees) and also works with UNL in offering early college classes (first 2 years math, english, etc.) that transfer directly at an even lower cost. I personally have attended SCC and think that while the classes are compressed (quarter vs. semester system) the classes are much smaller (about 35 students max) and you can get a more hands on, cost effective education for the first 2 years by going this route. Other options also exist in the eastern Nebraska area. The Public school system is what I would term decent to very good, depending on the area of town. Parents in more affluent areas are able to more easily raise money through PTA's and the like for extras that the school district cannot afford. Pick where you live carefully as your children Read More

It's OK, hope you like sports - 3/21/2007
Lot's of bike trails, some lakes nearby that tend to be crowded on weekends during the summer as there is not enough of them. Arts and humanities are decent but underused and unappriciated by most people so they do not recieve the funding to stand out for the size of the city. The university has an art gallery that is quite good. I hope you like sports (I do) as the beloved Cornhuskers dominate everything else (including weddings being shceduled) during football season. Beautiful little gem of a baseball stadium called Haymarket Park where Nebraska plays from March to late May and then the Semi-Pro Saltdogs play during the summer. Great place to take the kids for a reasonably priced (if you eat before you come) night out. The Lincoln Stars are a Semi-Pro hockey team with a good tradition that plays just north of downtown at the Ice Box located on the State Fairgrounds. However, before taking your family to a game consider that it must be easier to get tickes if you are well versed in Read More

Not bad for size of town - 3/21/2007
For the most part I feel very safe here as a law abiding citizen. I would not want to be a criminal here though, or be mistaken for one, as Lincoln's Finest can be quite zealous, sometimes a little over the top. At least most of them are friendly if you are not brandishing a plastic Read More
