Don't be sucked in by the hype of the Upper Valley - 5/9/2017
If you want an honest opinion, please keep reading. In total, our family has lived on and off in this area 10 years, first on one side of the river, then on the other. This means we spent part of our lives in VT and other in NH.

First off, the area has gone down hill in these ten years with crime becoming a major issue. I feel it probably ALWAYS was some sort of problem because these Northern towns breed discontent thanks in part to a multitude of factors. It's the same in any place where the good jobs have fled and all you are left with is a handful of haves and the rest "the great unwashed" living on the edges.

Drug crimes is all over the Upper Valley with a large number of people in Lebanon getting arrested for using or selling. It's also disconcerting to see a lot of unemployed men 20 plus years old walking around the area up to whatever because they can't get jobs. There are also a few mentally ill or "sedated" people who wander around and it's Read More

Life has to be better than this for the regular pe - 2/11/2016
Life is just too difficult here for the regular person, particularly if you come from any other state. I have no idea why they claim the unemployment rate is so low when there are very few jobs and even less GOOD paying positions, unless there is a hidden backdoor to employment. If you work in health care, maybe you will be okay, but the tradeoffs are just not worth it. Customer Service is non existent and there is a huge hillbilly vibe where drinking, drugging, and smoking are not only acceptable, but you won't fit in unless you do one or more of those activities. Drug crime is high for such a small population and most young people move away to pursue better economic opportunities if they can. It is very common for people to be in trouble repeatedly with the law. Going to the courthouse is not a shock for them! Also if you want just a normal life (okay Read More

A well-kept secret retreat from frenzied city life - 1/31/2009
The Lebanon/Hanover, New Hampshire community is often rated among the best places to live in the country. Population, however, remains a scant 20,000 or so. We enjoy the benefits of hosting Dartmouth College (whose alumni flock here in retirement), a world-class medical center (Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center), theater & arts, recreational opportunities, and a beau colic country setting. Employment opportunities include high-tech, education, finance, medical, retail, and a smattering of manufacturing. Schools must be good, as graduates attend top colleges across the country. Additionally, if the living gets to tranquil, a two-hour drive will take you to Boston in one direction and Burlington, Vermont in the other. Even New York City and Montreal, Canada are within reasonable Read More
