The worst place I have ever lived. It is dirty, crime ridden, uneducated and good luck getting good medical care. San Juan anything sucks. Unfriendly, ugly, dusty, traffic is bad and the drivers are worse!!!!! Its legal I guess for people to keep trash in a heap instead of disposing of it. No one will do anything about it either. Outdoor recreation on the cheap - 3/11/2018
World class fly fishing (San Juan shuffle!), nearby colorado skiing, and perhaps one of the best climates in the continental US (average western summer with mild winter, sun almost every day). I've never seen bumper to bumper traffic except when there is an accident, the air quality is actually among the best in the country on most days (see AQI rankings), and it has dramatically more cultural diversity than the midwest, with some AMAZING food. I personally love Farmington, NM im an architect and an architect doesn't get paid much in New Mexico but in Farmington, NM it is different because if the plans they have for the city 1: they plan to shutdown all the power plants by 2020 declared by obama so the air will be better. 2: is that the city if getting greener they are recycling more and there more of a grassland now. 3: is Farmington is the fastest growing city in America 1 out of 3 not in population but more in construction they have a 84.5% construction rate a year and it grows more and more by 2020 the city plans to be the size of Albuquerque they have the most commercial in the state and Farmington plans to have the second most commercial in the state. Read More

Horrible place to live - 10/18/2014
San Juan County has the highest percentage of domestic violence in the country. It also has the highest amount of methane gas in the country, and the majority of individuals living here have developed asthma, cancer, or serious respiratory problems. The coal fired power plants in the area are among the worst in the entire nation and pollute the air. There is radioactive materials buried underground nearby from nuclear testing, and tremendous amounts of uranium in the ground. Most people here are uneducated, and a heavy amount of non-denominational churches that are male-oriented and see women as subservient, and the general resonation of the area is very hateful towards women. The Navajo tribe is moving off of the reservation and compose most of the employees of the stores and are degrading the area. There is a large amount of drug dens, and a meth problem. air quality of farmington nm - 11/22/2010
I wold like to correct you on your rating of air quality in Farmington, NM. For the past few years the air quality was rated as a "1" on Sperling's bestplaces.net. This was a correct rating. Now, Farmington, NM is rated as an 86.1. As the former Public Health Educator for the Department of Health in Farmington, New Mexico in San Juan County, I was hired to do undercover work to research the emission of the third worst coal-fired power plants, two of them that reside in that area. The emissions cause about 80% of th children in San Juan County, especially the Navajo children on the Shiprock reservation, to have asthma, not to mention the effects on the adults health also - devastating health effects. I worked with an Epidemiologist that had a Doctorate degree, who confirmed these findings. The area has a very peculiar culture very heavily influenced by the Navajo reservation nearby. Farmington is the largest city within a three hour radius and is very limited in its shopping. If you plan on moving here get used to ordering online or making one trip to do all of your shopping in Albuquerque. The city has really funded their parks and recreations well; however, they are looking into closing down the community theater to cut costs. This region is very dry and there are no lakes to swim in.
