Elmira looks like the armpit of the earth. What happened? This could be gorgeous and has such potential. Heck, you've got Mark Twain's grave here, in a historic cemetery. Why are headstones kicked over on the ground and grass poorly maintained throughout? The college is breath-taking, too, but everything else looks like extreme poverty has taken over. The city needs to step in and help it's citizens. Come Read More

City of Elmira, NY - 2/28/2014
I have lived & worked on the Southside of Elmira for nearly 30 years. I recently retired from F. M. Howell & Company, a nationally known pharmaceutical packaging and distribution company which has been in the Howell family for over 130 years. Howell has four modern plants, all built within the city limits.

There are other industries with plants in Elmira such as Hilliard and Anchor Glass, as well as in the surrounding areas. There are also two maximum security state prisons in the area, one of which has provided good employment for Elmirans since 1876.

Housing is inexpensive in the Elmira area, and I have known several families who have relocated here from the NYC area.

The once-bustling downtown area of Elmira was hit by a devastating flood brought about by Hurricane Agnes in June of 1972. It is now mostly business and professional offices, banks, restaurants, grocery stores, and a few dollar stores. But several shopping malls can be Read More

safest city. my butt - 2/10/2012
I have lived here all my life and I can honest say that this city is NOT the safest place to live... there are just as much drugs and murders here as there are in a lot of other cities and states.. a sex offender lives in every neighborhood (or sometimes more than 1 in each neighborhood) As far as the population increasing ..... that is only because of the two prisons that we have here in the Elmira area and all the prisoners families have moved her and brought the trouble with them. The school are pretty good now that the Superintendent has changed.. the last two Supers ran the school district down... It is slowly coming back now with Joe H. The only jobs here are retail or Correctional officers and that is NOT a job for everyone. If it wasn't for my mother still being here ...I WOULD BE GONE IN A HEARTBEAT! Elmira Read More

Unfortunately, Elmira closes down by around 6pm--no one on the streets. There are no cafés, very few restaurants, and little culture. We do have a performing arts center which is a godsend. The town is quite clique-ish, and people prefer you and your family to have lived here since the Read More

Another Opinion - 2/2/2007

I came to Elmira a few years back by choice as I wanted to live in an area that I could by land/real estate inexpensively. I own a beautiful place here on just less than 100 acres with a nice big old house for well under 200K. People complain about high taxes, but I look at the total cost of home ownership in this area and it is not out of line with many other areas that I have lived in. The country here is beautiful, with lots of recreation, the finger lakes are close by, there are over 60 wineries in the area. Jobs may be a big harder to come by, but a young family could come here and buy a house for 50K (and have many, many choices at that price point), so where most families in this country are house poor, this is an area where you really can afford to own a home very easily. No area is without issues, but for me, this area offers so much and is really one of this country's best kept Read More

Once upon a time...... - 8/29/2006
I have lived here all my life and I can say that it is not the same town where I enjoyed my youth. Manufacturing is all but gone. The king of employment is the retail stores and restaurants that line Interstate 86. The neighborhoods have their share of the social problems that plague many larger ciies. Family activities are not that common which is the reason that our children who are in their early twenties are leaving this area. While one or two schools in the city school district are beginning to turn themselves around, the district itself has some major disclipline and morale issues. If I were to start all over I would look elsewhere to raise a Read More
