1) "Rochester is a great place to live if you're looking for a balance between city life and outdoor activities. The parks and trails are amazing and there's always something to do. The cost of living is also reasonable compared to other cities." - Sarah K.
2) "I've lived in Rochester my whole life and I can say that the winters can be brutal. But the summers make up for it with all the festivals, concerts, and outdoor events. Plus, the food scene here is diverse and delicious." - David T.

it has it's pros and cons... - 1/30/2007
i have been a college student in rochester for the last four and a half years, and i'm looking forward to leaving, not because rochester is horrible, but because it doesn't really suit me. lots of people are happy here, lots of people hate it. i grew up in buffalo, so i'm tired of the winters in this region, and rochester is especially windy, and it can be painful, so if you don't like cold temperatures, i wouldn't reccomend any city in the great lakes region. there isn't a ton of culture, but i work in a lebonese restaurant with the best middle-eastern food i've ever had [it's called sinbads, by the way]. the amount of museums is unimpressive, the childrens museum and the science museum are decent, but the Memorial Art Gallery kinda stinks, being an artist/illustrator, I am not happy with the amount of support in the arts around here. the crime is bad, it has one of the highest murder rates per capita in the nation, almost everyone i know has either personally witnessed a crime, or

No joy, no glamor, no class - 12/31/2006
Rochester reminded us of a person who once had a lot going for them but slipped into destructive behaviors and decline. There is a serious problem with corruption on all sectors of the city. Public transport spends most of its energies building false pictures of the city bus system. Our direct experience found the system badly managed and in decline. It was difficult to travel anywhere in any sort of a timely manner at nights, weekends or during holidays.
The area is considered one of the most empoverished cities in the state of New York. We relocated to Rochester based on the advice of a former resident and without doing sufficient background research. We were relieved to escape after just under two years.
Most of the schools are pretty bad. They have a serious abaitment problem with lead paint in housing stock.
The winters are not as bad as predicted. One does become very skilled at snow shoveling.
As with many declining

If you like high taxes and plenty of minimum wage jobs, Rochester is the place for you. The only good thing I can say about this area is the really nice summers and summers only. Another is the good schools in Irondequoit. This is a township bordoring the lake with two High

Best place to live in America - 12/5/2006
I have visited every inch of America and I have found no place more affordable and enjoyable than Rochester, NY. A secure college educated person can easily find a job and live the high life while making less than $50,000 a year. As a twenty something I already own my own home, a new car, and enjoy an amazing social life. The only way to enjoy Rochester is to explore the area, you will find the West side suburbs to be very blue-collar, the east side suburbs to be very white collar, and the center city somewhere in between. Every suburb is safe and so is center city. The area around the center city between downtown and the suburbs may be the only area to avoid, as is the case with most older cities. Diversity and culture abound and there is something to co everyday, even in the winter. If you are looking for year round sun, try Florida, this is the Northeast. Skiing and the finger lakes wine country are nearby and are a lot of fun. This is a city where an entrepreneur or

Weather & taxes - 11/16/2006
What can we say, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes, it will change.
With only 165 days of sunshine per year, we are not the weather destination for anyone. It is always anything but sunny.
The taxes in NY state are driving people out of the state by the droves. It is hindering growth and jobs are at a

killing ourselves to pay our bills - 10/28/2006
Rochester may be beautiful for it's changing seasons, but pretty leaves and fresh fallen snow don't pay our bills. Neither do our jobs lately either. The ever dwindling economy makes it virtually impossible to enjoy owning your home because you have to take every hard earned paycheck and hand it over to our government who is taxing us to death. Our property taxes basically negate any write off we get for owning our home. Entertainment wise, there is much to be desired. You either have to be into the "arts" or into going to nightclubs. Other than that, your options are dinner and a movie. Since SO many people have only dinner as their option, plan on waiting 2 1/2 hours for dinner. Once you do dinner, a movie and a babysitter.....you've spent over $120.00. Once again, taking you back to how unaffordable everything is. If you don't enjoy freezing your a** off, you can plan on sitting in the house, or pacing the malls looking at all the stuff you can't afford, for five months out of the

The Rochester Region is a wonderful region. It is full of natural beauty including waterfalls in downtown. The area is a nature lovers dream. I got the hell out... - 9/11/2006
after only 4 months I packed up my bags and left. I came with the wrong impression that this was a laid back and friendly city. To my surprise it is NOT! Drivers in Rochester are horrible...they drive just like they do in NYC, Wash., DC and L.A. They run red lights all the time and throw litter out of their windows on the roads. Road rage happens all day everyday. No wonder it is a dirty and depressing city. Racial tension is so high you could cut it with a knife. More than half of the city is ghetto and you'd think you were in a third world
