I've lived around Youngstown my entire life. I grew up in Boardman and now live in Struthers. It's not the best place to find work, but if you're willing to work 2 part time jobs or get creative, its not hard to survive at all. Housing and groceries are cheap. Crime isn't as big of a factor as people or media portray. In my 42 years of life, I've never been robbed, mugged or witnessed a crime. Basically if you are aware of your surroundings and have common sense, you're good to go. I am also an alum of YSU and always felt safe on their campus as well, even at night. Overall, this area is a great place for families. Good schools, great parks, etc. Plus the weather isn't bad either. We don't have catastrophic weather like Florida or earthquakes like Cali. Read More

SO much better than Florida! - 11/3/2017
I am in Girard, so just outside of Youngstown. I haven't spent any time in Youngstown proper, but Girard is lovely. I am loving having seasons, and the fact that oppressive, disgusting heat that keeps you trapped indoors in front of the AC is minimal here. My dogs are happier, with fewer issues with fleas, allergies, etc. There isn't nasty dusty/chalky soil here like Florida, either. The people are more friendly as well. I would prefer mountains like Western NC or like West Virginia, but it's still beautiful here with lush green lawns and pretty creeks and such. Also, the cost of living is so cheap that it's mind blowing! I am in a safe, nice area. I am disabled and cannot work, so the jobs or lack there of don't affect me, but I see hiring signs all over. 10/10 recommend. Read More

Can't Wait Until I Escape - 7/13/2016
I have lived here for years and I have two young adult children. One is here finishing college and the other is in Tokyo. Why? Because she couldn't find a job here in her field that paid well.
I am a single parent and all of the bills come down on me. In the last ten years, I have seen many young adults move out of the area. Jobs are limited or declining and most jobs in the area are part time...part time means 8-10 hrs per week.
Stores or businesses are closing in the malls and industrial parks and you cannot make a living here even though the cost of living is low compared to other parts of the country.
The weather is OK with about 25-30" of snow per year. Little entertainment and just a few good parks. Nothing to keep you here!
I need work....as soon as I can, we are out of Read More

crime in the mahoning valley - 12/29/2013
between warren, akron, and youngstown there are few places to live where crime, violent crime has such a profound affect on the community. The suburbs are not as bad, but the heart of those cities is like living in a cicago or new orleans, just less people. Read More

What's the deal? - 1/29/2008
I had lived in Youngstown my whole life up until I was 24. I guess I hadn't paid attention to the weather much then, but after having moved back after being away for almost 7 years, I wonder what's the deal? The climate change is astounding. One day you have a nasty cold, wet, 30 degree January day(which is normal), but the next day is sunny and 50!! Well, needless to say, I am wondering what was the reason I came back. Just a comment, I am currently looking to move somewhere with more consistent Read More

An OBJECTIVE review of Youngstown, Ohio - 7/27/2007
Undoubtedly, Youngstown, Ohio has many disadvantages. It is economically depressed, has very high crime rates, limited cultural activities, it rains and snows a lot and is hot and humid in the summer. That said, I thought it would be nice to point out some better aspects of Youngstown, since simply trashing it is very unhelpful for anyone who may wish to know more about the City. First of all, Youngstown has some extremely nice, safe and affordable suburbs, including Boardman, Canfield, Poland and North Lima. These places also have exceptional school systems; the Canfield and North Lima public school systems are two of the best public school systems in the state. Crime in these areas is extremely limited. Also, a quick note on violent crime in the City: most of the violent crimes involve drugs in some way and you are highly unlikely to be the target of violent crime in one of the suburbs. The streets of the suburbs are very safe, even after dark. Youngstown, overall, is an Read More
