Recreation as a Way of Life - 3/18/2008
Eugene serves as a perfect hub for the outdoor life. In the city we have miles of riverfront biking, walking, running trails, two buttes at either end of town for climbing and hiking. We have skiing at mountain biking less than an hour east, and a gorgeous section of coast line an hour west. Live music and dance opportunities every night of the week, museums and authors' gatherings regularly through the University of Oregon. Life is

Eugene is my "Best Place" - 11/25/2007
I went to Middle School, High School, and College here and then did the almost obligatory move away. I moved back after living in Portland, San Diego, and Portland again, for a total of 9 years. When I lived elsewhere and was asked about Eugene I would say "It's a good place to raise a family...". And as I got older that sounded like less of a negative!
People talk about the rain and the gray. I can't argue with statistics, but it has never seemed that bad to me. Yes, I am thrilled when Spring comes, and when the rain starts in November I know I'm in for a slog, but that's why we get the gorgeous green all year long. And I love the change of seasons. I didn't miss them when I was in SoCal, but now I adore the changing Fall colors. We rarely (every couple of years) have snow that sticks, and then it's only for a couple of days. During Winter it gets below freezing several nights, but gets up to the 50s during the days.

Eugene - 6/28/2007
I love the weather in Eugene. One minute it can be pouring buckets and the next the sky is clear blue. Sometimes it even rains while its sunny.
One thing I honestly dislike about Eugene is the number of transients. They are everywhere in the downtown area. Other areas are fine, but downtown, I don't like to go out walking by myself at night. Luckily Eugene is quite large, so there are plenty of alternative places to

don't listen to the whiners - 5/30/2007
Eugene is the best city i've lived in. Incredible outdoors opportunities,
people are very friendly on the whole. The rain can get to some people, winters are a bit dreary. Spring, summer and fall are gorgeous. Cost of living is reasonable. Realestate has gone up pretty quickly, 15-18%, for the last 3 years which might make it more difficult for first time buyers. Excellent city parks. Bike friendly, bike lanes throughout town, bicycle and walking trail connects west and north eugene with downtown.
cons:Pretty safe, some homeless teenagers hang around downtown. Bike theft is prevalent by the university. competitive job

Climate - 4/16/2007
Rains quite a bit. Rain comes in cycles of about 2 to 5 days rain, then 2 to 5 days dry except for July and August which are virtually rain free. Snow is rare. Temperatures rarely go below freezing though at times it gets down to

Visited Eugen, Or recently - 4/1/2007
I visited in Feb 2007 for 2 weeks. I found the cost of living to be slightly higher than the Austin, TX area, but Oregon has no sales tax. What you get for a dollar at McDonald's is usually $1.29 in Eugene. At first it seems the price for regular gas in Eugene is only a few cents more per gallon...until I noticed "regular gas was 85 octane whereas in Austin regular is 87 octane. Mid-grade fuel (Austin's 92 Octane rating is considered Premium gas in Eugene. So gas is definately higher.
Jobs: In my field, entry level positions offered $3.00 per hour more than Austin. From casual observation I determined that the cost of living is slightly higher, but the pay significantly

Hippies. Deadbeats. Beatnicks. Granolas. Homeless People. Crooked governments. Rain, moss, fungus. Worst place in the world for allergies. Low paying jobs and HIGH cost of living. Horrible place to consider retiring to and getting worse every year. Drugs everywhere. Bad schools for children. But hey, everything's green and we have Starbucks

Great place to live, especially if you are a hippi - 12/5/2006
I went to the UO and thought it was a great school. I wanted to stay if there was a job market but unfortunately there wasn't one. There are too many educated people fighting for minimum wage jobs at Wild Oats.
It would be a great place to raise kids-lots of outdoorsy things to do, very beautiful and peaceful, etc. Its also very blonde and white. No diversity at all. A few ethnic people mixed in but its not a cultural mecca AT ALL. Its nothing like Evanston, IL, Northwestern U which could be compared to Eugene in many ways-except so much more diversity and culture-b/c its next door to Chicago. I was so happy and relaxed in Eugene, until my loans ran out and had to get a job. You have to make sacrifices if you want to live here. DON'T move here w/o a job first. Same thing

The schools - 9/28/2006
I went to high school in Eugene, and found the education to be very solid. South and Sheldon HS both have the International Baccalaureate program, which offers rigorous, well-respected international coursework. In addition to this, at Sheldon we had AP English, Am History, European History, Calculus, Spanish, French, Physics, Biology, etc. Sure there were slackers at our school, but we also had people going off to elite schools across the nation.
The quality of education was a strong positive to Eugene when I lived there. Now getting a job after college is another
