What BestPlaces Users Say about Portland
Portland, Oregon is a dynamic city known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation opportunities, and progressive culture. It has a population of over 600,000 people and is consistently ranked as one of the best cities to live in the United States. With such high praise, it's no surprise that many people have chosen to make Portland their home. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, I have included summaries of user reviews from BestPlaces.net.
According to a review from "Mark," Portland is "a city that truly lives up to its reputation." He goes on to mention the city's charm, friendly residents, and abundance of coffee shops and microbreweries. Another user, "Samantha," agrees, stating that Portland is "a dream city for anyone who loves nature and outdoor activities." She also highlights the city's food scene and bustling downtown.
However, not all reviews are glowing. A user named "Jonathan" mentions that while he loves the city's culture and opportunities, the high cost of living can be a challenge. He also points out the growing issue of homelessness in certain areas of the city. Similarly, "Jessica" mentions that the traffic and commute times in Portland can be a downside, although she still enjoys living there overall.
In summary, it's clear that Portland has a lot to offer, from its unique culture to its beautiful outdoor spaces. While some reviewers mention challenges such as high costs and traffic, the majority of users are happy with their decision to live in this dynamic and diverse city. As "Mark" puts it, "Portland truly is a gem in the Pacific Northwest."

All things considered... - 8/10/2009
I have travelled the world extensively and lived in the private sector of Europe. I can say, unequivically, that all things considered, Portland, Oregon, is definitely the most under-rated place in the world. If not for Ireland, you could say that the Pacific Northwest could lay claim as the place where the color green was

I'd rather be around blue collar white trash than a bunch of low life ghetto entitled minorities. Go back to your ghetto in the east coast. With reverse discrimination being on the rise, Lily white portland sounds great to

The insignifigance of big cities - 6/30/2009
I moved from a small town to the middle sized metropolis of Portland in anticipation that it would have an environment that would meet my values and foster growth. As well as offer me tremendous opportunities in my career path. If I had known that two years, and three jobs later, I would be making the same amount of money, have to deal with traffic and weather induced headaches. I probably would have stayed in the low-key small

Portland is great due to where it is. You are within a several hours or less from the ocean, the high desert, the mountains, and the Colombia River Gorge. the culture of the city is sort of like San Francisco, and a lot like Seattle. It is uniquely northwestern. The downside is the lack of jobs, housing cost, and the weather. These can combine to be very

Moving to Portland, OR from Milwaukee, WI - 5/25/2009
Am relocating to Portland, OR in July 09 from Milwaukee, WI. Never even been there before, but researched and read enough to convince me it's the right place to accomplish my future goals and lifestyle, meet a boyfriend who's a thinker and vegetarian as I am. I hear a lot about Portland being cold in the winter, but really, feet of snow and below zero temps for weeks on end (sometimes months) cannot compare to the sound of 40's and mist in Portland! Here I

Fine living, rude people, and high housing costs - 5/14/2009
I lived in Portland, Gresham, and Beaverton for over 20 years and found it to be a great place to live at that time. It is a great place to live for outdoor recreation, you have the Columbia river and the Willamette river both for sailing and water sports. Snow skiing is only and hour away and the Pacific Ocean and the sand dunes are a couple of hours. Horse back riding in the Cascades and the Pacific Crest Trail. It was a wonderful place to live when I was young and had a good income and was a great place to raise my family.
However, now that I am retired i can no longer afford to live in the area. We sold out and moved to Missouri and bought a nice home for $70,000.00 and are gas is usually 40 cents a gallon less than Oregon.
If you are young and have a good job it is the place to live. If you are retiring and living on a fixed income I would strongly recommend that you look at southwest Missouri the cost of living is cheap and the people are

Eskimos have 36 words for snow; Portland has 154 k - 5/14/2009
"Green is the color" were the first lyrics of the fight song for the Portland Timbers, of the now defunct North American Soccer League. There's a reason for that. It's water. As far back as the journals of Lewis and Clark, people have complained about the weather in Oregon. Writing about the constant rain over the winter of 1805, Lewis wrote: "The winds violent. Trees falling in every direction, whirl winds, with gust of rain hail & thunder, this kind of weather lasted all day. Certainly one of the worst days that ever was!"
When I first moved to Portland, I remember some confusion at the weather reports. "Rain changing to showers, followed by rain in the evening. Drizzle in the morning turning to scattered showers by night, Then, overnight on Tuesday, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing, with rain and snow mixed, followed by freezing rain. Wednesday morning may well see a silver thaw."
Then it would proceed to rain for two days straight, then
