Carlisle, PA, is at a crossroads of interstate 81 and US 76 (turnpike) which means its easy to get to, and easy to get out to places from. The town of Carlisle itself hosts Dickinson College, and The US Army War College, a huge Amazon distribution center, Carlisle Events (enormous car shows), and a lively downtown. The local schools are solid, and there's quite a bit of recreational events nearby - Hershey, hiking, hunting, trout fishing, theatre, and local athletic clubs.

We are still suffering from sticker shock after living here for 7 years. This state charges you for EVERYTHING and the ROI is near to nothing. You have to pay a toll just to enter PA from OH and NJ state lines. There are toll roads across the state that essentially doubles the cost of gas. Gas is cheaper by as much as $.50 in MD and VA. PA adds extra taxes to the gas. You have to pay toll charges for all local calls – usually about $.15 per minute. The taxes are very high. Residents must pay Federal, state, local, and ‘right to work’ taxes. They are all calculated on your gross income. We never see a return. There are so many township and bureaus, but the system is broken. Sidewalks, streets, and infrastructure are falling apart. Sadly this is true across the U.S. Home prices are unbelievably high and the homes are old or run down. Wages are not comparable for the cost of living. Cultural desert for the arts... - 4/3/2009
Carlisle, PA is a very pretty, historic town of just under 20,000 people not far from Harrisburg, and only an hour and half from Washington, DC, Baltimore and the outskirts of Philadelphia. It is the home of Dickinson College, and near to Gettysburg. It boasts a cineplex which runs the usual American blockbusters, but there is not art movie house. There are a few small musical organizations, but no professional theater. While Dickinson College events are open to the public, they are poorly advertised to the general public. The only the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet offers peformances at a relatively professional level, and its company performs at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.There is a Blockbuster and a small video store. There are almost no good restaurants, by cosmopolitan standards: the gastronomical offerings go from coffee shop fare, and pizza parlor cuisine, to the standard chains like Abblebee's, Red Robin, Friendly's and Cracker Barrel and descending down

Carlisle is a great place to raise a family. The schools are good, crime's under control, the area is historic. Residents are very active in the community, creating many opportunities for family activities like sports, music, theatre, etc. The cost of living is good (below national average). Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and New York are all within day trip driving distance. The greater PA capital area provides many avenues for employment.

I am originally from Northern California, so I am still getting used to the relatively high population density here in the East. However, Carlisle is a good place to raise children. What crime there is can be avoided by not being in certain parts of the town after dark. It is relatively close to the Washington DC area and to Philadelphia. The Harrisburg airport could be better, but good deals can be had. Schools are considered fairly good, and excellent shopping can be done within an hour's drive of the city. The town itself has numerous older homes with character, but housing prices are fairly high. Don't Go! - 7/26/2007
I have visited family there a few times and I would really rather not go back. It is definitely not somewhere I would want to move, it was bad enough that I had to get married out there. Carlisle is the reason I never want to move to a small town. They are really behind as far as technology, not many businesses even have websites! Huge religious town not that there is anything wrong with that but most are Pentecostal. There are plenty of Assemblies of God churches. I even attended a church service and yes witnessed the "speaking in tongues" very strange! Great place to live if you believe women are only here ( on Earth) so that men don't get bored! Yes, I know. Employment - 6/21/2007
My Wife and I are planning to move to Carlisle or the Carlisle area as soon as I can find a job. Anyone in the area with any suggestions for a job service or something of that nature would be greatly appreciated. We currently live in Florida (past 3 years) but are from southwestern New York State. I have worked in the facilities maintenance field for 26 years including as a supervisor.
We will probably rent until we find a house so any info on those two aspects would also be helpful.
Something along the lines of work at a school, college, municipality, large hotel or housing develpment is probably the best fit for my skills.

Life after Hawaii - 10/14/2006
I love it here. I will always miss Hawaii, but there is life outside of the Islands. Being a native of Hawaii, born on Oahu, I thought I would never leave. I never wanted to, but the cost of living proved to much for me and my family. Alas I had to do what was best for my family. I now own a Home, a HUGE house, 2800 SqFt 6 beedroom 3.5 bath 2 car garage a nice lot with a huge storage shed and the property includes a rental unit that I own. This would cost my over a million dollars back home in Hawaii. Yes, yes I know it's not Hawaii, but I can always go back to visit. Besides, i would rather pay a $1200 dollar mortagage than one in excess of $2500 -$3000 a month!!
