Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a bustling city located in the western part of the state. With a rich history and diverse culture, Pittsburgh attracts many residents from all over the country. In this particular place, there are a variety of neighborhoods and communities that offer unique experiences for those who call it home. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in Pittsburgh, we will be summarizing several user reviews from BestPlaces.net. These reviews come from individuals who have first-hand experience living in the city and can provide valuable insights for those considering making Pittsburgh their home.

1. In their review, Susan R. describes Pittsburgh as "a hidden gem" with "tons of character." They go on to praise the city's affordable cost of living, saying "I can afford a nice house in a safe and quiet neighborhood without breaking the bank." Susan also mentions the abundance of outdoor activities and cultural events that make the city a great place to live.

2. James S. shares a similar sentiment, stating that Pittsburgh has "a unique charm that is hard to find in other cities." He also mentions the strong sense of community and friendly neighbors as major positives. However, James does note that traffic can be an issue, especially during rush hour.

3. According to John P., Pittsburgh is a "city of endless opportunities." He highlights the job market, education options, and entertainment as major draws for him and his family. John also appreciates the city's efforts in revitalizing its downtown area, making it a more vibrant and livable place.

4. In contrast, Emma L. expresses some disappointment with Pittsburgh, saying that it "lacks diversity and can feel very insular." She also mentions the weather, noting that winters can be long and harsh. However, Emma does acknowledge that the city has a "small-town feel" and is a good place to raise a family.

Overall, it seems that Pittsburgh offers a unique combination of affordability, community, and opportunities for its residents. While there may be some challenges, such as traffic and weather, many reviewers found the city to be a great place to live and would recommend it to others.

I Love Pittsburgh, I really do...But I don't want - 3/4/2008
Pittsburgh is great! It is a very homey, community oriented, and close knit city. There is plenty to do between tons of festivals, cultural events, science center, zoo, museums, night life districts, the incline, Football! (Go Steelers!), boating, First Night, Light up Night, Theater (lots of that), Concerts, pretty much everything any other major city would have. Night life could be better. Though there is quite a bit of it it's kind of in trash, scary areas (not that clean). There is also a low ratio of young people here. Not the hippest place to hang out. The people are loud, outspoken, goofy, yet so friendly. Pittsburgers just tell things how they are and are such a hoot to hang out with. I think Pittsburgh is pretty cultured and great if you like a sense of belonging. You also get a judge free environment. No one here is snoody or arrogant. Mostly I feel people from all statuses get Read More

Do you like disposable income? Me too. - 1/31/2008
There is a reason Pittsburghers like to "drink, smoke, gamble, attend sporting events, and dine out." They have the disposable income to do so. Show me an overly health conscious, highly anxious, anti-gambling, and anti-drinking person, and I'll show you a mortgage they can't afford. (And a waiter they short-tipped).

Sure, the weather sucks.
Sure, the people are simple.
Sure, the local government is backwards.

But, if you are like me, you like the luxury of owning a nice, affordable house. There is a lot to be said for that. And when the weather sucks, you have enough disposable income to vacation in Florida for two weeks.

Don't believe the statistics! - 11/19/2007
America's most livable city... Let me share with you the reality of living here. You can read all the good things other places... and there are plenty of good things like low crime rate and the associated demographics. I encourage you to read about Pittsburgh, it may just be for you! However, you should keep the following in mind before you consider a move here:

1. You will not be able to drive to work and park your car! You will be forced to use public transportation or to pay through the nose for parking (in cash at the cheap $5 lots). If you park at the stadiums you will have to find another place on game days. Your employer will offer no help here but will just expect you to do what people here have always done. You'll find that is the attitude. Not a very forward thinking city or people, they are stuck in the past.

2. There is no bypass around the city connecting the suburbs. In fact the "neighborhoods" are very badly connected. People here Read More

I Miss the "Burgh!" - 11/2/2007
I am originally from Pittsburgh and I currently live in Atlanta, GA. Pittsburgh is very underrated! I miss the beauty, character, and wonderful restaurants in the city. I moved to Atlanta 11 years ago and every year, this place gets worse. Pittsburgh has far less traffic and the apartments are more affordable and are usually bigger than they are in Atlanta. I can't wait to move back in the spring. Oh, and the people that live in Pittsburgh are far more "real" than they are in Atlanta. Atlanta boasts about southern hospitality. It's more like southern BS. There are far more phony people that live in Atlanta than there are in Pittsburgh. Moral of the story. Move to the "Burgh" and stay away from the Read More

recent visit to Pittsburgh - 10/23/2007
I recently visited Pittsburgh for the third time in 5 years. I found it an interesting, richly cultural and friendly city. The cost of living, especially for real estate, is less than half of the value where I currently live in N. Virginia. There is a low-key, relaxed atmosphere downtown where I went to the theater and some good restaurants nearby. The only thing that bothered me was the heavy traffic to and from the city; it was almost worse than the DC area at the time I was driving.
I am recently retired and am considering Pittsburgh as a place to live. I'm also an active ESL teacher and want to continue teaching. Can anyone provide some resources where I might find ESL teaching jobs in Pittsburgh?Read More

Right on Brett - 7/23/2007
Everything you said was true. I love how they say our downtown sucks. I have also lived around in different parts of the country(west and east, then back to the burgh). I love Boston, and N.Y. the best, but Pittsburgh is still always going to be my favorite. I lived in Denver, and they are said to have such a nice, clean, downtown. However, in my opinion it can't hold a candle to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's has cool theaters, amazing architecture, condos are coming in now! Then there is so much more also. It looks beautiful standing on top of Mt. Washington looking at our amazing skylines with all the hills, lush scenery, and bridges going over the rivers. It isn't just new age boring bland crap with parking lots. I could keep going on about our higher education, and neighborhoods like Shadyside, Squirrel hill, Mexican War Streets, Mt. Washington, Bloomfield, but I will end here before it gets to long.

Some people just don't look around enough and let the negative aspects Read More

collections of natural history and art in the country. You also criticize how old and outdated a lot of the pittsburgh residents are, which is very true, but if I lived here to see Babe Ruth hit the last homerun of his career (which was at Forbes Field), watched the steelers win 4 super bowls in the 70's, and watched Bill Mazeroski hit a World Series walk off home run (this first in world series history), I'd stick around this town to watch Syd the kid take us to our third stanley cup title making us the only city in the country to have 3 titles in each of football, baseball and hockey. And know that I was born in Cali, lived in Baltimore, LA, San Diego and Illinois but love the Read More

Elizabeth, I also am going to say that's funny, but not agreeing with you. Maybe you grew up here, but obviously your facts are outdated and you don't know much about the city. The public school system of the Greater Pittsburgh Area is hailed as one of the best in the country. With programs like Upper St. Clair, and Mt. Lebanon that consistently rank within the top public schools in the country the public school system is not a joke, its actually quite impressive. I recently spoke with a co worker that recently moved to North Allegheny from Florida and her children, both of which had nearly straight A GPA's in their Florida schools, had to attend Sylvin Learning Center for a few months just to catch up to their class.

Also, I'm not sure where you got your information from that all the businesses are up and leaving Pittsburgh, but that is actually quite far from true. I'm not sure if you've heard of it, but there is a small hospital called UPMC that is based in Read More

Pittsburgh is great - 7/5/2007
These last two post make me laugh. I lived in 5 cities and found myself in Pittsburgh. It is a great town. It has some high quality city living, with a small town feel. Everything is so much cheaper here so your money goes so much further. The last person seems like she is one of those urban sprawl types. "A real downtown" Haha, Pittsburgh's downtown is beautiful and it is changing very fast. More and more condos and development is coming into it. This city is set with character and its own style. You have top quality museums, plays, musicals, theaters, architecture, and it goes on and on. The last two posters seem like the type that wouldn't notice that though. I lived in LA, San Fran, Seattle, then to N.Y. and now Pitt. I can honestly say that Pitt is just as great as all the others while being cheaper too. You can buy a house here for what you get for an apartment in San Fran. People are friendly, and the culture is great. I don't know what a "real downtown is". I guess it must Read More
