Trashy State Beware South Carolina ranks number 50 - 3/5/2016
I had no idea that a state with such beautiful natural recourses cared so little. On the one quarter mile road from the highway to our lake house I picked up seven bags of garbage last year and expect to surpass that this year. It is so strange moving here and realizing that so many people toss garbage out the window and leave garbage piled up in their yards. It is a low income, non-union, state. Does poverty equal a lack of effort to find a trash container. They also permit stripping of lumber with no concern for the regrowth. South Carolina is the filthiest state and I would say Greenwood is one of the worst towns. Tethered by fast food and Baptist churches sending everyone to heaven in a garbage truck. Few people recycle. It is just so sad. I may be the only person to reuse bags or reuse water Read More

Love it!! - 12/30/2006
We recently relocated from Savannah to Greenwood and we absolutely love it!
The town is quaint and clean with an ongoing downtown revitalization, the people are so nice it does not seem real and there is everything here that a young family could need without being crammed full of the typical strip malls and chain stores its a good size-not too small not too big.
The main mall has tons of potential but is in desperate need of some direction and new life other than that I just cannot think of a bad thing about living here. It really is a high-quality small Read More

Greenwood, SC - 1/15/2006
Greenwood is a former mill town that's in need of a makeover, but doesn't have the funding of, say, a Greenville, SC, which has had a startling rejuvination. But that's not say the city fathers (including the chamber) haven't tried. People have been encouraged to come downtown (called "uptown" here), but there is precious little to come to down/uptown. Commerical stories are few and far between. In fact, the most prominent downtown "stores" are law offices that dot the main business district. Do these lawyers have that much to do?

This town needs an infusion of cash from the old guard (the Self family, for example) if it's to have a rebirth. But there is little likelihood such cash infusions will occur because there is no one pushing the matter. The chamber/city movers are cautious to a fault. The newspaper is a public relations vehicle for the power structure and thus any improvements will move with all the force of this state becoming Democratic in the near future. Read More
