great city compared to most - 8/21/2007
No city is perfect for everyone, but Austin has a lot more going for it than most. It's reasonably affordable, the local economy is strong, people are friendly, and the hill country is very scenic. There's about 2 months of really hot weather and about 2 months of colder weather, with really pleasant Spring and Fall seasons. Even Summer and Winter are quite tolerable since everyone has air conditioning, and winter has plenty of warm days. There are some excellent schools (and some bad ones too), just like in every other city in the U.S.
There are plenty of whiners posting comments on this site, but at the end of the day, it's what you make of it. Austin is an easier place than most to make a good

You'll find what you want in Austin - 8/10/2007
Austin is unique in Texas right now -- a Progressive city. And you can ignore Mike's comments. Texas in general, and Austin in particular, boasts a majority of intelligent, kind and open-minded folks who welcome all people of good will. We grew up in Texas, went to college just north of Austin, and taught all around the area. We now live in another state. But when we move back, Austin is the only place that we will consider living. It's hot but very livable, and its intellectual and political climate more than compensates for the physical

A lot of arrogance in TX as a whole... - 8/10/2007
I agree with a previous poster that there is a lot of arrogance here for some reason. There is no reason for anyone to be stuck on themselves. No offense to any Native Texan reading this, but this state is not what it's all cracked up to be. Yeah, people are friendly, for the most part, but Austin alone is turning into Little California, which is kind of scary! I'm not into tree hugging and I don't shop at Whole Foods. Can you tell I'm not a Native Texan or Austinite?? I've lived in several places throughout my life and never, before moving here, did I ever experience so much arrogance!
Oh and the traffic system is very unorganized and there's a lot of congestion because of it, along with the big and slow construction trucks, of which the drivers of these things don't know how to drive in the right lane!
People didn't want Austin to get as big as it has, so the city is at least 10 years behind on the planning for the improvement the traffic flow. Be

Austin living - 8/1/2007
There are many things to consider when moving to a new area. For Austin, it has a lot of rush hour traffic (a crawl), high property taxes(the no state income doesn't help because the property tax is so high),high sales taxes, yes there are lower housing starts than some parts of the oountry but also lower appreciation in value for the long run, the hills are nice but if you can't afford those areas you will be living in some very flat and plain looking areas with no Austin community feel, yes there is always great live music around, most food you will find is barbecue or mexican/not a lot of variety or high cuisine, schools are good if outside of the city limits, they shut down the state guaranteed tuition plan a couple of years ago for parents to send their kids to college at lower rates, state colleges are getting expensive, this is the only city to live in in Texas, but if you don't have a job here when you come you will face a lot of competition from a highly educated workforce,

Nice city, lots of calm and friendly people. - 7/30/2007
I enjoyed my stay while in Austin at the Barton Creek Resort and Spa. My husband and I wondered out into the Hills and saw beautiful country. Lots of nature and some wild life. Creeks and streams. Nice up and coming shopping centers. Beautiful homes. Am I giving it away? Really enjoyed it.

Just moved here and agree with previous posts - 7/19/2007
First and foremost, its true. Austin is filled with Caliphony transplants. Its yuppyville. Everyone and there mom wants to move here, making Austin the most expensive city in Texas. I honestly think the city is a little overrated. It has the same issues as any other city in this country, you know. Crime, congestion, racism, growth, etc. As far as the job market, I'm actually shocked at the type of work thats offered. Its all menial work and service sector jobs. Otherwise you have some serious competition when applying for a real career. I do agree, the scenery is nice (on the west side of austin), but who can actually afford to live there? Downtown is going through a major boom with at least 10-20 skyscrapers being built. Its just another mid size city which will resemble Dallas in 10-20 years. As far as the singles scene, guys beware! This is a telecom town where women are outnumbered by men. (google it) If your 20 years old in college then it's a different story, otherwise most of

LIVING IN HELL IN ARIZONA - 7/12/2007
I currently live in New River which used to be the outskirts of Phoenix, however Phoenix is taking over the area fast. The air quality here is horrible, the summers are getting hotter, traffic jams are an everday occurance and unless you make over $100,000 a year don't try to buy a home here. So I have been taking a look at Austin and some of the surrounding cities. I have read many blogs on the good and the bad and it seems that Austin is a city that is about 10 years behind Phoenix. I only hope that the planners in Austin take a look at all the things that have gone wrong here and learn from it. I am planning a visit to Austin this summer and hope to be able to call it my new home soon. If you hate Austin try Phoenix it's like hell on
