Nice Enough when compared to rest of Texas - 5/10/2007
Austin is the most hyped, over-rated city I've ever lived in. The culture here consists primarily of the bar scene on 6th Street, along with a decent music festival. The quality of the schools are fair, the cost of living is the highest of any city in TX, the weather is friggin' HOT 6 months of the year (100-degree days in early October are not uncommon), and the locals are mostly a bunch of aging hippies who talk about how great everything was in the 70's.
Downtown Austin is currently undergoing a tremendous boom in high-rise condo construction. Something like 15-20 buildings either currently under construction or planned to start in next 12-months, with most of these being 30-50 stories tall. These condo towers will be as tall or taller than any building currently in downtown, and will forever change the perception of Austin as a people-friendly, livable city.
If you feel you must live in Texas, then Austin is probably your best bet. However, you can do

Moving from Denver to Austin or Seattle this summe - 5/9/2007
I have lived in Colorado since 1981, but will move this summer to either Round Rock, TX or Edmonds, WA. Debating the cost of living (I don't make that much money), hot weather vs. cool, traffic, and sunshine vs. lack thereof. I have a teenager who will go to the Univ. of TX or Univ. of WA. My best friend lives in Seattle, but I've heard a lot of good things about Austin and seems like my fixed income will go much further. Any

Unique City - 5/8/2007
I can't believe all of the negative postings about Austin. It's true that people who have lived here for a while (2 years to 2 generations) will forever complain that Austin was so much better before it grew. I suspect they have been and will be doing this until the end of time.
I love Austin. It's a truly unique place and it's definitely quirky. It's true that there aren't that many upscale restaurants. I have one friend who complains about that, but I also have a friend that loves the fact that there are only about two or three places here that you can't go to wearing flip flops. There is great food: BBQ, Tex-Mex, Mexican, Middle Eastern, South American, South Asian, Japanese, Chinese, etc, you just need to know where to look for it. Basically you ask.
Austin is built for the health conscious. The headquarters for Whole Foods is located down town and HEB has a competing store, Central Market, which provides most of the same fresh and organic

Not a bad place to live - 5/2/2007
Austin is not a bad place to live, especially if you enjoy outdoor/fitness activities. The cycling/running communities are strong and prominent here. Austin has many good to excellent restaurants, many of which are local, mom and pop type places, with a few local chains mixed in. The city is a bit short on higher end cuisine, but as the population grows, so do the choices in that segment of the restaurant market. Austin is a great place to live if you are young and single. The nightlife is vibrant, and the live music options cover the entire spectrum of genres; being a town with a large university helps in that regard. Locals complain about the traffic, but compared to larger cities, the problems are minor. The biggest complaint is that drivers are a little too laid back, and make no serious effort to get their destinations in a timely manner. Cost of living is low, relative to other parts of the country, but high by Texas standards.
The largest downside to Austin

Great town if... - 4/27/2007
The other comment prompted me to offer my 2 cents. It's hilarious to hear Austinites talk about bad drivers! Texans are the worts driver's I've ever encountered! But tht aside, there are some other reasons not to move here aside from the provincialism of the locals. The mian reason is that the liberal vibe of Austin is liberal only in relation to the rest of Texas. When was the last time you ehard of anything good coming from this state? I rest my case.
But I have more to say-- The culture of Texas is myopic and self-satisfied to the point of being suffocating. Austin is loving itself to death. If you like bad food, intellectually lazy people and mosquitoes, Austin is the place for you. If you are intereted in the world, enjoy stimulating conversation, and want access to more culture than mediocre pop ands and folk music, look elswhere. But houses are darn

Central Texas Relocation - 4/20/2007
Austin seems to be the gold standard. Every book, magazine, blog, etc screams about how great this city is...and yes it can be true. At times, Austin borders on the sublime. It is unlike any place in America. But, if you are over the age of 30...well it might not be for you. Austin is beautiful. Austin is vibrant. Austin is a breath of fresh air. Austin is youth personifed. Don't kid yourself...soccer moms and PTA meetings don't mesh well in this amazing city of young people potential. Central Texas is superior to many places, but I would suggest San Antonio as a place to live for the 30+ crowd. Austin is the place that every middle-aged 30-somethinfg wished they had discovered earlier. Visit nearby Austin as a weekend getaway. Austin is simply an amazing city, but don't kid yourself into thinking you are younger than you are..enjoy it for its beauty from nearby. San Antonio is the soccer mom, minivan, PTA meeting, subdivision next-door-neighbor to Austin. They have a

DO NOT MOVE HERE!!! - 4/16/2007
Yes, this city was pretty cool. It is loosing its flavor because out-of-towners are ruining it! They want to destroy the green belt and everything that Austin stands for. Stay where you are- Austin doesn't need you!!! The city cannot support any more outsiders any way- just look at our traffic problem. Also- when you do come into town for a concert or two, please make sure to only use the left hand lane for passing
