Don't Move to Austin... - 3/25/2009
Don't move to Austin. We have too much for you to like here. Our hiking trails throughout the city are too beautiful for you to want to see them. Our vibrant nightlife is too exciting for you. You would enjoy yourself so much that you would die from it. The weather here is much to nice for you to actually be comfortable. You would be much happier staying in you Northeastern state and freezing your tail off in the winter time.
I'm sure you wouldn't like our low cost of living either. You would be much happier paying through the nose to live in a crime infested neighborhood back in Philly, NYC, Washington or wherever you live now.
I know you don't want your children to get a good education either. Our schools are much better than you would actually want for you kids, right?
Stay away... Don't Move to Austin... because really, we don't want Read More

Austin is great if you have a college education! - 3/21/2009
I have lived in Austin full-time since 1970, and have enjoyed my life here. As a liberal and a Democrat, I feel comfortable here, especially in the central city, a hotbed of liberal thinkers. Austin is a liberal oasis in a sea of statewide conservative mediocrity, and we will continue being that oasis in part because we attract like thinkers from other areas of the nation. The state is gradually reverting to a liberal political state of mind, and Austin will always be in the vanguard in this respect.

Our "winters" are great because we don't have cold weather, but the summers are hot and muggy. We live in our air-conditioned cocoons from mid-May to mid-October. One fact not advertised by the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau is that we are the "Allergy Capital" of the nation due to an annual allergy we call "Cedar Fever" caused by what are generally know as cedar trees. This happens from late November through the middle of February. But this can cured for most Read More

Nice Part of Texas - 3/19/2009
Austin is a very nice city to live in if you don't mind the long, hot summers. The lakes and hills are beautiful. There are plenty of great places to eat. People are usually friendl...even on the road. It's nice to have a large university in town. Lots of music venues and quite a few theatres, Read More

Austin is not like Texas - 2/9/2009

A place to live as good as any other - 2/5/2009
20 years here, I still think this is the best place. Cost of living has risen but we are still way under overpriced cities like LA or SF, not to mention NYC. Austin is democratic and quite liberal, trying hard to stay "weird" it's true but if you don't try you don't get! Diversity is the definition of the US, Austin is just that. Happy people are a majority here, that's all that counts! Read More

Property Taxes - 12/1/2008
All the people from out of state who are complaining about property taxes, fail to mention two things - 1) property taxes are high in the whole state because we have no state tax - when you compare total tax obligation, we are better off; 2) housing prices (and cost of living in general) are lower than in most of the rest of the country. So who cares that the tax rate is high if you're total spend is lower. Have a little perspective people. Austin is the most educated, most independent thinking part of the state. If you're a redneck, you probably won't like - that's a good thing! I can't wait to move back to Read More

Wider view of Austin - 11/10/2008
I moved here about 3 yrs ago from Phoenix. I am so sorry to hear how distressed the last person is. There are some areas of Austin that grew too much and are too crowded, thus when looking for a home, I crossed those areas out as a place to live. They are west of and north of Austin. Traffic is bad and most of the original Texans have become the minority over the people that moved from very expensive areas to the new "cheap" Austin (from their median home of 400k a 200k house in Austin in cheap though that isn't the case for most). Perhaps they should look at other areas around Austin. Austin is a safe city with a ton to do. I live East of Austin in Bastrop county. The people are friendly and if they are too slow on the road, they pull over to let you pass. The museums in Austin aren't up to par, but there are truly a lot of outdoor things to do, almost too much (sometimes there are 2-3 things on the same weekend and you have to choose). There is a wierd fixation on the Read More
