re: Quality of Life - 5/1/2007

I hate to be the one to say this, but it's the African-American community's own fault. I've lived here for 15 years and watched clubs geared towards African Americans come and go, and they always go for the same reasons. 1. The "Thug" mentality that alot of young men bring to the club runs off alot of business and brings alot of violence. Case in fact What used to be "The Roxy" switched to Urban-Rap music, fights started, windows were broken, people were hurt and business sank. The club went under very fast, and it was always packed, until the "thugs" showed up. There was a club next to the 6th street entrance to Emo's that tried the same thing, with the same results... Paradox on 5th was the most succesful dance club in Austin until they switched to an "Urban Format" as they called it. Guess what happened? Fights, drugs, broken stuff and business dropped off...Mid-Town Live on the east side finally burned down and alot of people were ticked off that the cops were happy about it, but they were happy because EVERY WEEK the responded to call after call after call there for drugs and fights.
2. More patron's hang out OUTSIDE the clubs geared to the African Americans than INSIDE. This was the case at all the "Urban" clubs I've seen come and go on 6th street. It seems that alot of the African American club goers would rather hang out outside the club with their friends and harrass everyone else on 6th street, than actually go into the club and have a good time. Until these things change you probably won't see a vibrant scene geared towards young African Americans, because why invest in something where you are guaranteed headaches, fights, lost patrons, drugs and more people outside your club socializing, than inside spending money. Try opening a club yourself here if you don't believe me. You'll be broke in no time. Until the Media Image of the "Cool to be a thug/gangsta" that we present to young Africn Americans is drastically changed, these problems will only continue.

re: HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE - 10/17/2007

ummm. you're just going to the wrong places. alot of places play stuff from the 60's. as for the Frank Sinatra... well, most people that listen to ole Frank are either dead or almost there so there's no market for "Ole Blue Eyes" But lot's of places cater to the older "50 and over crowd" read "Continental Club, Broken Spoke, Ginny's and Poodie's Hilltop" As for the bum's well we keep trying to get rid of them with legislation, but they keep finding it "un-constitutional" we tried a no camping ordinance. nope can't deprive someone of sleep anywhere. I think they should do what a couple of other cities have done and require a permit and safety vest to "solicit" at intersections... heh. You're listed as living in Buda. Property taxes aren't that high in Buda, at least not from my point of view. Would you rather pay alot in State Income Tax so we can dole out more welfare like Louisiana? Thought not. My wife and I have a combined income of about 72000 and have no problem with our finances. It just comes down to budgeting. Sorry it sucks for you.

I can tell from the things you listed that you think this town is missing that you are a generic Paris Hilton wannabe who reads tabloid rags, and buys whatever Vogue and Cosmo tell you to buy this season. You speak of Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and Nordstrom. All overpriced, superfluous, generic stores for the sheep that come from "affluent" areas. You also slam the schools because of "english-learners." A little bigoted are we Ms. Bunker?
"Consistancy in architecture." It appears you want everything to look exactly the same, like the generic town you grew up in right? Bland, stale, boring to look at. Am I hitting the nail on the head? I think I am. And before you exalt private schools over public schools, re-read your post. NUMEROUS grammatical errors and proofreading errors abound in your writing. 1. The city is Murrieta not Murriea, 2. When you live in the Inland Empire, you don't send YOU child... 3. ...from Spanish to deco (deco should be capitalized.)
Move back to Ventura County or over to Newport if you don't like it. I'm sure you'll be more comfortable among all the other plastic sheep that make up 99% of the population there.
Maybe you can find a plastic surgeon there that can manage to fix you nose, because it's stuck way up in the air.

re: Austin is not that great! - 11/4/2008

You obviously lived in the wrong part of Austin. ALL CITIES have stuck up rich people. I live in Far South Austin and my neighbors and I are very down to earth and friendly and not stuck up...a little pretentious maybe, but not nearly as bad as the people that I've met in my travels from the northeast (read this as NY, NJ, and PA)As for the no camping or hiking comment... did you ever leave you house? The city is FULL of hike and bike trails. The Barton Creek Greenbelt alone has more greenspace than anything I ever found in the northeast cities put together. Canyon Lake, and the Colorado River lakes (Lake Travis, Inks Lake, Lake LBJ etc.)are all within an hour's drive and are great for camping. There is so much nature and FUN stuff to do close by that I've lived here for 15 years and still haven't explored all the great camping areas close by. I must say Thank You though for your negative review because hopefully it will keep more people from moving here and ruining Austin by trying to change it into a version of their own town. You're right about 1 thing and one thing only. The drivers in Austin. But, you have to understand, Austin is a College Town. Young college kids drive like idiots. Just do what I do, pray for them to wreck. (which they will, they always do.)Just hope it isn't into your car. lol

Weird is good. It's what gives Austin it's personality and charm. Imagine if our fair city was like H-Town of Dallas. urgh.

re: Help me talk my husband out of it! - 6/29/2007

I've lived in Austin for 15 years and the only negative things I can say about this town is that it's hot and the traffic sucks. Other than that it's the best place I've been, and I work all over the United States as a Hydrographic Engineer. I hate to bust your bubble, but there's alot for a late 30's housewife to do here. You should listen to your husband. There is alot for your 2 boys to enjoy and alot for you to enjoy as well. Zilker park is great. Barton Springs pool is 100% spring water and 68 degrees year round, Deep Eddy pool is spring fed also but quite a bit warmer if Barton is too cold. Our children's museum rocks.(I have 2 kids myself) The spring concerts at Auditorium shores are great for all ages, young and old. There are alot of women like you they all have a great time. Yes we're hot, but having worked in Florida all last summer for 19 days at a time, I can say that the quality of life in Austin compensates for the heat which is almost, but not quite as bad as living in White Trash Heaven (Florida). Other places may have cheaper rents/home values, but the HEB grocery store have UNBEATABLE prices. I have yet to find cheaper groceries ANYWHERE else in the U.S. even in podunk redneck inbred no cost of livng towns throughout Mississippi and Lousy-Anna where people are so poor that they only get shoes in the winter. (Yes these types of place still exist in America)
Listen to your husband sweetie... get the hell out of Florida, move to Austin, but don't bring a bunch of people with you... we like a few new people but there's alot of people running here.

Don't Move to Austin... - 3/25/2009
Don't move to Austin. We have too much for you to like here. Our hiking trails throughout the city are too beautiful for you to want to see them. Our vibrant nightlife is too exciting for you. You would enjoy yourself so much that you would die from it. The weather here is much to nice for you to actually be comfortable. You would be much happier staying in you Northeastern state and freezing your tail off in the winter time.
I'm sure you wouldn't like our low cost of living either. You would be much happier paying through the nose to live in a crime infested neighborhood back in Philly, NYC, Washington or wherever you live now.
I know you don't want your children to get a good education either. Our schools are much better than you would actually want for you kids, right?
Stay away... Don't Move to Austin... because really, we don't want you.
