Paradise Pales in Comparison to the Seashore - 11/15/2007
I moved to VA Beach four years ago when I retired from thirty years in northern Illinois. People are friendly, the weather is wonderful, flowers bloom throughout the year; the ocean is nearby; church life is vibrant; housing is hard to find in a median price range; utilities are cheaper; schools aen't great; traffic is horrendous (mostly because of the out-of-state newbies driving here!) activities are always available and oh, yes, the ocean is nearby. There is just really no downside to living here -- especially in relation to winter in Illinos! After living in VAB for the rest of my life, heaven may be a step down in acomadations, with the plus of seeing Jesus face to face. Linda

I retired to VAB four years ago and life has nver been sweeter or more blessed. What can you say about wonderful weather, great church, good friends and ocean views except "Thank you, Lord, for placing me here!" I may not be a native but I'm sure a local!

Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads...Thoughts - 7/31/2007
My wife and I lived in the Hampton Roads area for 4 years, and here is what we found....the good and the bad...
GOOD
If you like the water and the beach, great place for boating, fishing, surfing and hanging out at the beach; many miles of oceanfront nearby
Lots of Christian churches of many denominations, my wife and I found a great non-denominational church in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake; most of the friends that we made in the area were people we met at our church
Good public schools in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, and many choices for private/Christian schools
Lots of stuff to do...the Virginia Marine Science Museum, Nauticus (the Naval Museum)...lots of nice restaurants...and, of course, going to the beach
THE BAD
The cost of living has risen sharply in the last several years, due to the housing boom; between the time we arrived, in 2003, till now, housing assesments have been going up around

Housing is outrageous but there are tons of things - 7/17/2007
The prices for houses to buy is ridiculous. If you actually have the money to afford houses around here good for you but most decent houses are going to run you over $300k. If you are renting you are looking at paying at least $1200 and that is a minimum two bedroom in a decent neighborhood. One good things I can say about this area you are in the middle of great things to do. You can easily go to the beach, back bay waters, mountains, camping, D.C area, Eastern Shore, White Water Rafting, Philly, or Even New York. Its a great area if you like to get out and do things. Yes, there is alot of military but if you move here, you knew that before you moved here and there is alot of historic sites you can always visit. I have enjoyed my stay here. Good

Prices have finally leveled off... - 6/14/2007
I've lived here 5 years and I love it. My wife and I got married here, had our reception at the oceanfront, had our first child here, and have enjoyed beach living since we got here. It certainly has much to offer and the crime rate being so low and schools being so good were a big attraction for us and still are. We were however starting to get worried as we saw the assessment and sale prices on our condo continue to rise, which is good for selling for a profit, but we were wondering if we were ever going to be able to afford to upgrade. I think that time has come! Prices have finally leveled off and our income is catching up. We are thinking right now is a perfect time to buy. It is definitely a buyers market and we hope we can take advantage while we the market is cooling off and there is less competitive bidding. It still is pretty expensive to live here but we think its worth it. I wonder if anyone else feels the same

Great place to educate your kids - 4/26/2007
We've lived in Virginia Beach twice now, before and after tours to Japan. We enjoyed living here the first time, so we asked to be stationed here again. The school system is the #1 reason we wanted to come back. VB has wonderful schools. The teachers, the curriculum, the administration, the buildings, you name it, are all top notch.

Thinking of relocating to Virginia Beach, any feed - 2/20/2007
Hi everyone. Stumbled upon this website while trying to research best cities to live in america.
My fiancee and I currently live on the west coast, and are seriously thinking of relocating to the east coast. He lived in Maryland D.C area for about 10 years, and he just prefers the east coast. I myself am a California native and have been trying to convince him to think of moving back to Cali with me (which isn't looking so great). He first offered Miami, but when I went there for new years, I loved the wheather, and the scene was pretty upbeat, but not the most ideal place to start a family. So he mentioned Virginia beach. I have never been there, and hopefully I'll get to visit before we decide to move. I'm 25, he's 37, what the median age range? I hear real estate is doing great over there, which would be perfect for me since I'm a realtor and he's a loan officer. I hear the prices of homes are unbelievable cheap as well.
So any feedback would be good. Ofcourse, I'll

Observations from A Native VB Animal Lover - 12/29/2006
Definitiely read the comments from Expatriot, because he describes much of what I have trouble with regarding Virginia Beach. I was BORN here, raised here, and enjoyed the simple life Virginia Beach once possessed for its military people as well as locals, the very way of life that brought so many visitors and tourists here in the summer as well. There used to be lots of trees, shade, not too much traffic, and a neighborly way of being.
Now however in the last 30 years, VB has turned into a sprawling, overgrown mockup of the big city, with a mainly greedy, conscienceless city council. They cater to the wealthy, and there is an unspokenly LARGE homeless community that this city council is doing nothing to help but sweep them under the carpet and jail them whenever they can. They concentrate around the oceabfront area because there is noplace else for them to go but the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center and a couple of churches down there that feed them.
