My thoughts - 12/24/2006
I agree with both of you first off you can't compare detroit to VAB cause yes Detroits crime blows VAB out the water fifty times over, but yes virginia beach crime has gone up but its not bad unless you grew up here then yes it might seem like its gotten real bad.Atlanta has the same population as VAB and it has triple the crime so if or when you see numbers like ATL pop up then you know somethings worng.Virginia beach is still okay for

I am actually contemplating on relocating back to the Virginia Beach area. I lived in Chesapeake, VA some years ago. High Crime in Va Beach... yeah

High Crime - 12/20/2006
I've lived here most of my life and the crime (past few years) has quadrupuled. Think Va. Beach tried to hide it for a number of years (knew of crimes never reported to public), but they can no longer

Thinking about Relocating - 10/2/2006
My husband and I live in Houston, TX. I have finally convinced him to consider relocating. Some places we are thinking about are Virginia Beach, Hampton, and Chesapeake. A couple of other places include Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina. We are looking for a city with 4 seasons, beautiful scenery, friendly people, and a nice place to raise our future children. My husband is in education and I have a sales job that will transfer; therefore, employment is not an issue. I need some honest thoughts about the places I've mentioned above. Coming from a big city, I do understand big city issues. i.e. crime, traffic congestion, poverty, and horrible schools in certain areas. Your thoughts and advice are both greatly appreciated. Thank

Observations from an expatriot - 9/24/2006
I grew up in Va Beach from 1967-1987, went to VB public schools, graduated fromCox H.S.(top HS in VB) and attended Tidewater Community College. It was a good place to grow up and raise a family. The military bases brought alot of people in who stayed permanently. For many people, especially those from the northeast(NY,NJ etc) it was a bargain. I have spent the last 19 years in the N.E. and Midwest(see my comments on Toledo)and it is just mind boggling to see how the Tidewater area has changed. The growth rate is staggering. Every square inch of Va.Beach is covered with condo's and shopping centers. You can't even get near the beach for all the 3-4story condo's covering the sand dunes. I hope these folks have good insurance. The city did a wonderful job transforming the resort strip along Atlantic Ave. from a ticky-tacky honky tonk to something that is really attractive. The old family owned hotels have been replaced with 8 story mega-hotels so forget about sunning after 3:00pm.

Imake 60K and can barely afford to live - still week to week. Housing market is twice what a house is really worth and rents are insane @ over 1000.00 per month for a mediocre 2 bedroom apartment. Traffic is like DC -gridlock and not enough

Changing...but not for the better - 7/27/2006
My husband and I moved to Va Beach in 1994 from NYC. Since relocating the housing market here has really sky rocketed. We purchased a home in 1997 that was affordable to us but now that we are outgrowing the home will probably have to move out of the area! I thought I left New York, It appears to me that the powers that may be are trying to create a little New York right here in Virginia Beach. For folks like me who left a large city desiring a slower place, less taxes and a beter quality of life, Virginia Beach has become a disappointment. It's still a pretty nice place to live...but you're going to pay for

If you don't like the weather...... - 7/21/2006

Public Transportation not covenient - 7/19/2006
People in Virginia Beach drive . The buses are available but not practical. You'll be standing in the bus stop by yourself because you seldom find people who takes the bus. Crossing the pedestrian lane is tough too. You don't see people walking here because everybody drives therefore you are the only one crossing the street .It's safer being in your car because the pedestian lanes are not "pedestrian-friendly" because of how the traffic flow goes. You seldom find taxicabs in the streets except at the
