Don’t expect much from in Spanaway ... - 2/26/2019
I have been living in Spanaway since 1973 ... over the years I’ve seen its ups and downs ... and lately its been down. This is due, in large part, to the immigrants from other states who want to work in Seattle, but they can’t find or afford housing in the Seattle area.

Spanaway has always been a community with a transitory population ... largely due to the huge military bases (Ft. Lewis / McCord AFB) ... with about 65,000 people working at the bases. But this new crop of people are different ... they want all the trappings of a big city at the expense of the long time residents of Spanaway.

Beyond the huge popution and real estate growth over the last 8 years, the school district in Spanaway has always sucked ... mismanagement and misuse of funds top its biggest problem. For example: a bond measurement was passed in the early 1990’s, but then they never built the school. Now they want more money to build on the exact same spot because they no longer have Read More

The Armpit of Pierce County - 12/20/2017
I picked up my daughter from SeaTac last night around midnight and mentally prepared to make our way south through the detours of the train derailment in Dupont. We live in Olympia and the only options to get home were through Gig Harbor/Shelton or Spanaway/Yelm, we choose the Spanaway route. Traveling through Spanaway round 1AM we attempted to find a restroom for my family to use at one of the business along Hwy 7. We were prepared to spend probably $20 with any of them for some beverages and late night snacks but every single business had fresh temporary printer paper signs taped to their door saying no public restrooms which of course was right next to their permanent sign of restrooms for customers only. It wasn't just one or two, we hit every 7/11 and every gas station that was open, seven of them in total and every single one of them turned us away.

Thanks for not supporting your community in a time of crisis Spanaway!!!

Living in the great Northwest - 12/3/2013
One of the most beautiful places to live. However, it is very far away from my family and it does not get hot enough for me in the summer. The rain and winter darkness is something I always have to prepare myself for to avoid seasonal depression. This is a great place to raise your children. To live and enjoy this place you will need a college degree or technical degree to land a career making liviable wages. This is a college graduate workforce out Read More

spanaway sucks and is a hell hole. i work at walmart and i have sceen the people that come in and out all the time. all the drugies, criminals, shootings, parting poor people low lifes. we have run outs usually of beer all the time at our store. i have sceen fights many times here. we have even had a gang shooting. 4 out of 10 for crime, ha. more like a 7 or 8 like lakewood, tacoma and seattle. all the people that i talk to seem to agree. most good people that do live here know you dont go outside at night time especially if you are a girl. and might be a good investment if you do live here to buy a bullet proof Read More

Celebrate Spanaway!!! - 3/28/2009
I have lived in Spanaway my whole life and have experienced so many changes. Although still primaraly suburban and rural we are growing every day with new bussiness and new homes. Soon we will open two new schools. Ten years ago a few neighbors got together to form Celebrate!Spanaway a non-profit that created community awareness and togetherness and helped moved crime out of the historical downtown Spanaway area. We celebrate each year with a huge community fair in the Spanaway Elementary school yard on the second to last weekend in July. Also worthy of mentioning is our Beutifull Spanaway Lake and park newly renovated with miles of walking paths a new play area, beaches and picknick areas. We have a historical cemetary and several buildings, plus all of the conviences of Wal-mart and fast Read More

The Seattle/Tacoma area is a great place to live, - 1/14/2007
Western Washington has a lot going for it. It is an amazing, beautiful place to live with a fairly mild climate. There are many various recreational activities to choose from as we are on the ocean and also have several great national parks that can be enjoyed much of the year. It has many winter ski areas within short driving distance, not to mention several major & minor league sport teams, all of which help to make this a great place to live.

The area has seen significant economic and population growth for the past two decades. This growth has brought many new people to our area but in the process it has also brought negative issues we must take into consideration as well. Housing prices are at an all time high & well above the national average in our two largest counties, King County and Pierce County. The ineffectual planning of our local government officials to handle issues such as the climbing costs of housing and the rate of which the road traffic and Read More
