A great little city - 3/6/2023
I've lived in Huntington most of my life. Yes, there have been many changes over the years, not all good, but it is a great place to live. Huntington won the best small city in the Nation just a couple of years ago. There are abundant outdoor activities, a beautiful park and walking trail that runs along a steam (complete with ducks during the Spring & Summer months), a civic center that brings in concerts and events and Marshall University has various events and sports throughout the year. There are actually many job opportunities within 20-50 miles of the city if few exist in the downtown region and the residents for the most part are friendly and accepting. I'm sorry to hear some people have had bad experiences here, but I have done extensive traveling around the country, and I'm always happy to return to Read More

City in decline - 4/16/2021
Could be worse - drug issues, no good jobs, lots of crime, but nice outside activities. Locals don't like anyone moving here and taking a job - I can say that! Glad I got out - there are a few rich that control all and the rest poor. Read More

An average town with a bad rap - 11/30/2019
I've lived here since about 2012. I moved in from a surrounding small suburb called Shoals Manor where I lived for almost 10 years. I lived in Huntington for a few years before that with a roommate. And I don't see what all the people are complaining about. I've been called naive. Fine. I live smack in the middle of Huntington WV. I don't see any needles. Maybe one or two in the last five years. I don't see people stoned out of their minds. I don't see people getting robbed or hear gunshots. So just stop it already okay. That stuff exists here sure. It exists everywhere. But I don't see all the hype about it being such a terrible place. I can get out and walk anywhere in town right now and guarantee I'll come back just fine. It's time we put an end to all the extra bullcrap being piled on this town. Bad stuff can happen anywhere. Deal with it. Don't blame Huntington for your bad Read More

Nothing Good About This Place - 10/21/2018
I was born and raised in Huntington, WV and let me warn you: DO NOT MOVE HERE. It's a cheap little town and Marshall University is great (alumni here), but the amount of crookedness that comes with living in this town and state as a whole, is ungodly. Also, there is nothing to do. You have to drive to a surrounding city just to escape the drug infestation and find something interesting to do for the weekend. Law enforcement? LOL Try again. The police let these people run a muck and there is nothing anyone will ever do about it. The infrastructure is awful and there are no jobs here worth while. Why do you think all of us college graduates flee the state once we are finished? The people are nice, sure, too bad that doesn't make up for the lack of everything else. The hospitals are great, but they are here to rob you and make you wait 7 hours before seeing you and treating you. Hope your emergency wasn't really an emergency. No one wants to respect your education enough to give you a Read More

Probably the worst city (in the worst state): Data - 11/8/2012
I'll provide a mix of data (i.e., fact) and opinion. I moved here about two years ago to work as a scientist in the medical industry, and I'm *hoping* to take a pay cut to leave. The sad part: I love my job, but I find the area completely unbearable. Over 35 years, I have lived in seven states, visited every state in the contiguous US, and I'm perfectly confident stating that Huntington, WV is -by far- the worst city (i.e., pop. 50,000+) in the worst state... and I've lived in Arkansas. My evidence: The 2012 Gallup Poll (best places to live in the US) ranks states according to 13 indexes. WV not only ranks as the worst state overall, it also ranks *last* in five of the 13 indexes: "economic confidence index," "learned something new yesterday," "easy to find a safe place to exercise," "obesity rate," and "smoking rate." WV ranks 2nd-to-last in the US for "employed full time," 3rd worst in the US for "standard of living," "city/area getting better," "easy to find clean, safe water," and Read More

Huntington - 6/20/2009
I have grown up in the Huntington area. It has always been a good community, however there has also been a concentrated area of high crime in the city that seems to be becoming larger and larger. In fact we compare with much larger cities on both violent and property crime rates. This saddens me as a native Read More

Revitalized little city with growing creative ener - 5/30/2009
Pullman Square has revitalized the downtown: it has lots of great food, a comedy club, and great movie theaters. Countless once-empty storefronts have been recently renovated and the city has finally been growing again. Local music, art, and theater is honestly plentiful, with Marshall University feeding lots of that energy. A new Tuesday street concert series on 4th Avenue is being started in addition to the popular Thursday night Pullman Square concert series. Plus, the city and surrounding area is BEAUTIFUL; there are lots of trees and it's right along the Ohio Read More

Beautiful place with growing creative energy - 5/30/2009
Huntington is a city with growing creative energy and many great assets. Ritter Park is absolutely beautiful, and the Riverfront Park is a wonderful place that the city is in the process of renovating. It has huge potential. Marshall University feeds tons of energy into the city, including theater, local music and art, and major college sports. Pullman Square is a relatively new commercial area with a nice comedy club, very nice theaters, and great food. It is a good example of the fresh energy that has been reshaping the city over the past few years. Huntington is also in a good location relative to other major cities, allowing day trips to places like Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Lexington, not to mention in-state trip opportunities including world-class whitewater rafting or ski Read More

Diversity? - 5/17/2009
We're getting ready to retire in the next several months. Currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. We'd like to move to a small (for us anyway...there are more than a million people just in our county)city with a college and some cultural (music, art) activities. One of our questions about Huntington involves ethnic diversity. My wife is of Asian (Chinese) heritage and wonders how she would generally be accepted there. Thanks in advance for any information you can Read More
