What BestPlaces Users Say about Green Bay

Green Bay, Wisconsin is a city located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. It is best known as the home of the Green Bay Packers football team and has a population of over 100,000 people. The city has a diverse economy, with industries such as paper, healthcare, and tourism. It also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including parks, hiking trails, and water sports. However, like any city, Green Bay has its pros and cons. To give a well-rounded perspective, below are excerpts from four different user reviews about living in Green Bay.

- According to , JohnD wrote, "I have lived in Green Bay for the past 20 years and it has been a wonderful place to raise a family. The cost of living is affordable and there are plenty of job opportunities. The community is close-knit and the people are friendly."

- Another user, AmyS, stated, "I moved to Green Bay for a job opportunity and have been here for two years. I have to say, I'm not a fan. The winters are brutal and the city feels small and limited. There's not much to do and the cost of living is higher than I expected."

- In contrast, , SarahG shared, "I was hesitant to move to Green Bay from a bigger city, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The city has a lot to offer, from great restaurants to cultural events. The cost of living is reasonable and the people are down-to-earth and welcoming."

- However, not all experiences in Green Bay have been positive. On , BenT wrote, "I grew up in Green Bay and couldn't wait to leave. It's a stagnant city with little opportunities for young professionals. The winters are depressing and there's not much to do. I don't see myself ever moving back."

However, many appreciate the city's offerings, including outdoor activities and cultural events. Not that Bad - 8/10/2006
I haved lived in Green Bay for almost 10 years now and while the climate can be difficult at times, the people are all very inviting. We have a great melting pot of people and cultures while the crime, especially violent crime, remains lower than in most cities of this size. The city plays host to many large festivals for everyone to enjoy and the quality of life here is in my opinion high. We're not California sunny all the time, but it is a great place to live and raise a Read More

Horrible weather - 7/12/2006
No Spring. The 8 years I lived there no decent weather until June. Cloudy, Miserably cold winters from November through March, then generally wet cool and cloudy until June. The snow they get is horrible for outdoor activities. The snow usually turns to dirty piles, combined with the almost everyday cloudiess makes for a depressing place to Read More

GreenBay~ last comments were so funny!!! - 4/12/2006
I am SO glad I am not the only one! I pretty much grew up in New England and you know how we can be a bit stand off-ish. We are living in Appleton and they are 10X worse. Just rude people. At least in NE when we drove we had a bit of "waving someone in" these people will just cut you right off! Or when you do let them in, not even a wave, or a thank you. We have lived all over the country, and this is right up there with the worst. And the drinking, OMG, we went into a town of say 10,000 people, we counted 11 bars in the very small downtown, like a bar, a store, a bar. WHY? Do you need that many bars? We stay off the roads on weekends. We are counting the days to get out of Read More

I have lived in Green Bay for 9+ years, and as for the climate: If you aren't from the upper midwest, of course you're going to think the weather's horrible. I'm originally from Minnesota, and don't think there's anything different about the weather here. You have to be used to hot humid summers and long cold winters. As for the water/air quality--I quit noticing it after living here a couple of years. If you live outside of the Green Bay utility area, you are going to have bad water. As for the people-you can have fun, but it's real hick and families have lived here for generations and NEVER leave! Many people have rarely ever left the state, and that's the cause for a lot of the closed-mindedness. It would be a nice place to have a family, but other than that, you would be better off in Madison or Milwaukee. And the only thing to do is get drunk, and people here don't seem to realize there is more to Read More

Not the place to be... - 3/4/2006
...if you are single, like a lot of outdoor activity that isn't predominantly fishing or hunting, are open minded, like to meet friendly people, like to do more than drink and hang out at bars, like nice weather, like to earn a decent living with an associates degree level education, like culture or just generally like to be free and have fun and enjoy life. If you're not from here it's highly unlikely that you'll ever be accepted here. It is a good place to raise a family if you have one, and have a good job already. Otherwise forget it. I have lived here nearly 7 years and will be getting out Read More

Curious when I see surveys....seems to me Green Bay would be in the top ten as I moved here 2 years ago and over the past 2 winters I am surrounded by 60 to 70 percent of my colleagues with long lasting colds through the winter months. The air here is putrid for the most Read More

Green Bay is an armpit. It really is. There are no good jobs. Rent is cheap, but you are lucky if you make $10 an hour, even if you'd make $20/hour plus in any other city. The climate sucks - freezing cold winters, hot humid summers. The people are close-minded and unfriendly. The main form of entertainment is getting drunk and watching football. 2 years there felt like 20. I can't imagine who I'd recommend it to. If you're going to live in Wisconsin, live in Read More

Green Bay - 7/2/2005
I have lived in Florida, Tenn., Iowa, Madison, Wi, Washington state. Green Bay is one of the worst. Their water quality is horrible. You are actually told what amount you should drink and not to go over it. It is toxic water. So if you would like to have cancer this is the city for you. Soda would be a healthier choice to drink. Also some of the rudest people I have ever met. Even the retail people. You would think they would be nice. Not! Do not move here. This is a nice place if you happen to be a football player for the Packers. They will worship the ground you walk on. Otherwise drive as fast as you can through the city and get out!!! They do have a nice mall though. That is all I can say that is Read More
