The reopening of Amarillo AFB, 1950

I was part of the first USAF elements to reopen Amarillo AFB back in 1950.
The were no military structures to live in and the base had to be built from the ground up.
We live in an aircraft hanger (Post WW11 leftover) until military living quarters were built.
Wheat had been stored in the hangers from 1946 to 1950 and the rats some as large as dogs shared our living quarters.
Born and raised in the farm heartland of Indiana, Amarillo was a tremendous change for me and many others.
The population of Amarillo at that time was around 70,000. Homes for sale were around $12,850.00 for a three bedroom and single garage.
Presently living in Clarendon, Texas and USAF Retired, Amarillo brings back many menories when I shop there today.
