Good place to live but the winters are long....

Anchorage has come a long way....the box stores and chain restaurants have arrived in force! Fortunately there is still enough local and regional business to keep the mix healthy and interesting. Population is low (comparatively) however we have been beseiged with more crime than the average city of this size. Still the crime seems to be that of association - not random acts. The thing that never changes is the fact that winters are long. You can probably plan on snow in September and it may still be on the ground in April. Road crews do a decent job. Anchorage drivers are generally rude and in a hurry to get to the next stoplight. Overall economy is healthy. Schools are good with lots of options. If you like to fish or hunt you will like this area. Lots of trails for hiking and biking (watch out for the bears and the moose - seriously). Remember it is a three - four hour flight to get to Seattle so don't plan on a quick nor affordable weekend visit with friends or family the live in the 'lower 48'
