Review of Anchorage, Alaska

Economy cost of living
Star Rating - 8/8/2012
Living in Anchorage, AK is quite expensive unless you are established with a solid job. Everything is expensive here: housing, food, fuel, and utilities. It is a beautiful state that's good to raise children in. However, as people get older it is harder to tolerate the long cold winters. Everyone should visit the state at least once in their life.

Well actually, from '91 thru '97 my nice neighborhood 2 bedroom apartment next to a park, with electricity, basic cable and heat included cost $525/month. The personal 1-800 phone number was $18.50/month. ($3 more for personal 800 number from regular phone, so mom could call from Seattle anytime she wanted) Durable goods from the lower 48 are right around 10% higher than Seattle area. But, how many TV sets do you buy.? There is no State income tax or sales tax. Wages are at least 20-50% higher for the same stupid job you do in Seattle, and let it be known as I state this. Seattle area has pretty much the highest income level per type of job one does. So, I stayed after early '91 laying block (mason) on one project through '97 because at the very least I was being paid $10 an hour more than any thing going on elsewhere in the lower 48, (massive hours too... I may have missed out on 3 months work in 7 years, due to lack of work) I dated a pretty girl, a breakfast waitress at a regular restaurant that was paid $13/hr, plus her tips, 'til she got tired of me.....:( Not her fault, I am just an azz. Prior to going up to work on that 'one' block job, in Tukwilla (Seattle) my 2 bedroom apartment cost $545/mo., plus $85-$140/mo. electricity with no cable tv. And most importantly, at least $10 less per hour as a mason. And sales tax. Come on. Tell me living in Anchorage Alaska is expensive. But then again, I thank God for being healthy to do Masonry as a trade & sober away from drugs & alcohol.
