Review of Asheville, North Carolina

general ramblings from a new comer
Star Rating - 7/7/2006
I moved here in January, not from Florida, but from northern NH. Marriage was over & I was tired of being COLD! I did slightly more than point to a map & say...this place looks good, and On Jaunary 5, I pulled into Asheville, pulling my SUV &driving a UHaul. On most days I will say that my worst days here are better than my best days up north, but do have some concerns about Asheville...for me and perhaps to share with others. Housing is very expensive, for most folks. As a Realtor, I know first hand how difficult it can be to find not just suitable housing, but a property that you can go home at night and feel you got a fair deal. The other things here is thatr the job market is not nearly as diverse as the population. Like northern NE, it is very tourist driven and retiree' sensitive...unless you are in the medical field or are self employeed, be aware, it's tough.

But my real question here is...are there single straight men, fincially
secure in the area? I didn't realize how large a part of the population alternative lifesyle comprises...but it is quite large and while I could care less about someones personal preference...it's not my thing.

As I said, I have not been unhappy here, far from it, but there are aspects that you may wish to consider...particularly the crime rate. It's down played here a great deal, due to the tourists. Having come from a small town...big town policing has a long way to go before it gets my vote as a top notch, community friendly police force...particularly the Buncomb Sheriffs Department....I'm quite certain they have never heard of community policing! Good friendly folks, lovely weather...just don't expect much as far as protection or commitment from the men in blue... or brown...or grey!

Ironic isnt it? I just moved from Asheville to Northern, NH about a month and a half ago. Funny thing, sounds like we switched places all together. In response to your question of the orientation of the men there...there definitely are straight attractive, financially secure men there...you just have to look hard enough. I recommend personally, not staying in the city, since the "free spirits" in relation to sexual orientation tend t o gravitate that way. Head towards beautiful towns like Lake Lure and Chimney Rock where you have a lot of travelers and local business owners that have their heads on straight. Black Mountain, Hendersonville, and Hickory, NC are good recommendations as well. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck down there and know that I'd do anything to be back down there. Beautiful area with hands down WOnderful people!
