Review of Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville - the city in the mountains voted among
Star Rating - 10/17/2008
Okay -I'm biased, I live here! However, after leaving the UK many years ago, I have also lived in Washington DC, LA, Miami Beach and now in Black Mountain NC just outside of Asheville. This is a fabulous place to live if you enjoy Southern Hospitality in a City that has a creative 'edge' and a cosmopolitan yet spiritual feel. It's hard to drive anywhere without breathtaking views of the mountains. Great food abounds. The climate is mild - we are a city that many escape to in the summer. Winters are relatively mild which I appreciate after years in Florida. As a Realtor, I meet many people re-locating here and their 'wants' for an area often boil down to great places to eat, views, mild climate, and great people and we have it all! How are the prices now? I think houses are quite expensive now in Asheville? We are looking for a 3/2 ranch near the grove park inn or merrimon but not looking at trailers or junk yards and seem to see prices in the $400's online. We want a ranch - any ideas?

Could someone who lives in, or at least knows something about, Asheville please comment on the more favorable areas in which to live? My wife and I may be moving south (from northern NE) in the next year or so and have want to learn more about Asheville. We will likely visit there in April. We have not children; she works from home and I will likely be semi-retired (please note though that we are certainly not the "wealthy out-of-staters" who receive so much derision in these forums. We'd likely be looking to rent for a year to determine if Asheville (or wherever we wind up) will be the place for us. We're both very active (tennis, mt biking, hiking, etc).

I know how Black Mountain is a great place I was raised there and loved it. Coming up in a small town was wonderful. Not many job offerings out of school so I went of to the Army. Met my wife as I was getting out and moved to Nashville, TN. Although I enjoy my life in Nashville I try and get back to Black Mountain as often as I can. Beautiful Place!!!
