Review of Asheville, North Carolina

What a great place to live...work...and relax in s

I moved to Asheville about 20 yrs ago with my wife and kids..We were fortunate to find a nice home( 4200 sq feet...2/3 acre...public utilities..etc.)..only about 4 yrs old..for a very reasonable price of about 130,000. This house now would go for around 400,000. So, housing costs have gone up...but averaged size housing is still not too bad. So many things to say about the area I hardly know where to start!.. So, all I can say is...when you get here....just START!..go out there... hike some trailes of the beautifull BRP( our local code for our own "highway in the sky"... the wondefull Blue Ridge Parkway)...then drop down into a small town like Weaverville( off the OxCreek access road)... have lunch at a neat local place right on Main street WEaverville( pop. only 2500 a true "small town).. at a place like Sunnyside Cafe..or StoneyKnob Cafe...then zip right back into town via the excellent and improved( see the Tennesee border new route via same I-26) on the I-26 connnector...take in a movie at the Brew&View..(only 2 bucks!)..or head into Asheville center...for the Pub scene..Jack of the Wood....Hannah Flannagans...or music/entertainment/drinks..at the Orange Peel...or catch a lecture at the Lipinsky Hall of UNC-Asheville. So many options..so little time!.. My wife and I used to, for example, drop the kids off at school in the morning...then 30mins up to WolfLaurel ski area....and be there parked..50 yds frm the main lodge(on a weekday of course!).. in time to get FirstTracks on the slopes... ( Asheville has 4 ski areas within 30mins..to 1 and 1/2 hours driving)..We can now have a superb lunch at the brand new 2nd Mountaintop lodge..up on WolfRidge...some of the best views in Western NC...ski a bit more...leave about 3:15..and be home in 30 mins to greet the kids as they step off the bus..or swing by and pick `em up right at the school. Pretty hard to match this overall situation in almost any part of the country given traffic/weather/crowding/restrictions all over the place elsewhere! Feel free to email me anytime... I just joined this forum so I dont know how it works. But visit soon...if you even are thinking of moving here! All the best folks!.. vikingman73@hotmail.com
