Review of Bend, Oregon

Roving gangs of thugs
Star Rating - 3/5/2009
My wife and I retired to Bend a few years ago and we're trying to get out now. We had no idea things were so going to be so bad here after the collapse of the real estate market which is Bend's only real industry. Homeless gangs of thugs are roaming the streets nightly threatening fine Americans like ourselves simply because we are the "haves" and they are the "have-nots." My wife had a knife pulled on her by an obviously drugged-out young man outside the new McMenamin's during broad daylight and I had my golf clubs stolen from my Cadillac in the Lost Tracks Golf Club parking lot out China Hat Road. Apparently there's a very large contingent of homeless meth-heads living in the scrublands outside town and they come in town at night to steal and loot, according to the officer that took our claim after the condo was broken into. That's just the tip of the iceberg. It's so bad our children are afraid to visit us here so we're selling the condo at a loss and moving back to Kansas City. The sooner the better.

I have lived in Bend for 23 years and have never experienced Bend this way. Bend definitely is a city of the "haves" and "have-nots" and it has been that way for a long time but I have never feared for my family living here including the safety of our 7 year old daughter. All cities have their share of "meth-heads" and the like and yes, Bend has definitely been hit very very hard by the economic collapse but Bend, Oregon is no downtown Chicago slum. Have a good trip back to Kansas and say say "Hi" to Dorothy and Toto...they've missed you and want you to stay there.

Are you serious? Are you talking about Bend Oregon? I have lived here for 8 years and have not heard of the events you have described. If you think Bend has high crime, you might consider moving to Antarctica where it's a little safer! :> P.s. everyone is selling at a loss... but which real estate market isn't?

Enjoy Kansas City and its low crime rate, overweight people, and well mid western ways.... Bend is a great place and I am sorry that you have a hard time here. I'm going on year four here and have yet to lock my car or house. Sometimes luck favors the prepared and other times people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
