Boerne - a Mixed Bag

We are a family of 4 that moved to Boerne within the past 12 months, in an effort to escape the crowding and vanity of Dallas. We have owned our own business and done well financially, but wanted a slower paced, "regular" small town upbringing for our 2 boys.
Joan (another person writing a commentary) mentioned several items that are true about Boerne, particularly that its identity is wrapped up in trying to be a mini version of Fredericksburg, thereby catering to affluent housewives making day trips from San Antonio for lunch and antique shopping. However, I disagree with her assessment that the only dining options are limited to chain restaurants such as Denny's or Chili's (which my family tries to avoid). I suggest Joan look into the best micro-brewery this side of Seattle, in The Dodging Duck (they also serve a fantastic menu of organic bison burgers, salads, wraps, and German food. There's also the Boerne Grill that offers free Wi-Fi and great latte's. The Bear Moon Cafe is a turn-of-the-century bakery with a wide assortment of pastries and espresso, and The Hungry Horse Cafe combines the comfort food of the Cracker Barrel with items such as deep-fried green beans and famous Tootie Pie's (the buttermilk, and apple/cranberry simply rock!)
However, Boerne is also a sleepy town who's "good 'ol boy network" of City Council want to keep it from progressing into the 21st century as it relates to infrastructure. They are content to let outside developers colonize the town with $500,000 - $2MM housing developments so they can reap the tax revenue. Downtown is a "ghost town" by 8pm (bedroom community) offering no nightlife (for singles or families). Great private school (Geneva Academy) and public schools are very good also. Lots of churches and friendly family atmosphere. However, if you're from an area with lots of family activities, brace yourself for 30-50 mile (one way) drives to San Antonio or State Parks to keep the kids entertained.
Boerne could be master planned to be as unique as Durango or Sausolito, but the town leadership doesn't have the vision/initiative.
