unrestricted growth

When we initially moved to Charlotte we felt that it was provincial as compared to the Research Triangle part of the state. However,we soon got to appreciate the " big small town feeling" of the city. 10 years later things really changed. Violent crime always significant, increased to the point that Charlotte was considered one of the most dangerous cities. Traffic and pollution grew with the population. The city government was more concerned with population growth than quality of life of its citizens.
It is hard for me to understand why people will move to places like Charlotte just because the winters are milder. I would rather shovel some snow than experience oppressive heat and humidity, pollution crime and traffic. In fact I would rather move back to Rochester or Buffalo New York than Charlotte.
