I am a 30 year old African-American woman, and I disagree with the comment someone made about rebel flags being abundant in Charlotte. Perhaps they drove too far and ended up in some small town an hour outside the city? I have lived in Charlotte for 2 years and recently purchased a home at a GREAT price compared to the equivalent in many NE cities. There are a lot of professional and social opportunities for young professionals. You do have to work a little harder to find things to do, but the city is growing fast. If you're a sports fan, another big plus is the professional football team (Carolina Panthers!), Bobcats basketball team, and there are plenty of Nascar races as Lowes Motor Speedway. There's also the Performing Arts Center, other theaters, the symphony, etc. On the negative side, the city does have a pretty high crime rate. However, you can always live in one of the many 'burbs or smaller towns that are within a 20 minute drive of the City (like Fort Mill, Huntersville, Mint Hill, etc)
