Review of Charlotte, North Carolina

Schools: Good luck
Star Rating - 4/15/2007
While it appears the schools are getting better I can say they are not.I grew up in the public schools of Pennsylvania and used to the system up North. My wife and 2 children moved to Charlotte in 2001 (preschool years) not worried about the schools. FORTUNATLY for us our oldest now 8 got into a new charter school (Carolina International School) the year it first opened (our ongest will be attending next year as a K). My wife drives her everyday (30 minutes away) to attend this new school and it is the luckiest thing that has happened to us. We live literally 2 miles from Mallard Creek Elem. I can say the schools in Charlotte suck...sorry for being so honest. The teachers are too young and teach to the lowest level in the class. The schools are over crowded and are in mobile units due to the over growth and unlimited growth allowed by the massive Mecklenburg City government. (which is their biggest issue...they are too large...in PA schools were broken into municipal's which served the local population. The Charlotte area from all the places we have lived has teh WROST school structures and education (lived in Mt Lebanon, PA, Alexandria, VA, and now Charlotte, NC). One side note...more New Yorkers are moving down here too bring their nasty attitudes and rough approach on life. Very in your face...also crime is getting much worse in the once quit suburbs...I attribute this to the lenders giving anyone a loan as well...the folks who used to liev in teh city proper areas are moving to the suburbs bringing the gang related type crimes with them. We had 2 officers killed just 2 weeks ago...gang related. Its really a shame too, we do love the city area and the cleanliness but teh gov't here is bad...they have allowed it to grow too large for them to handle...with all that said...we do plan on staying until I relocate and would move back but I would be much smarter about where I live...outside of the mecklenburg grips! hopefully they get control of the urban sprawl and teh crime it has created...of the do that it truly would be the best place to raise a family..until then I would never move my family here just to be in Charlotte...move to Nashville, TN instead...I have heard noting but great things about Nashville.
