Crime, crime, and more crime!!!

Like another poster, I relocated to Charlotte from N.O after Katrina. I had actually been looking at Charlotte way before the storm hit. I'd visted Charlotte about 6 years ago and really liked what I saw. I'd also read all kinds of glowing reviews about quality of life, and costs of living here in Charlotte. I should have thought about the old adage "You get what you pay for"
My husband wanted to go to Denver and we had even even signed a lease hold on a townhouse there, but I convinced my him that Charlotte it was "the" place for us and our two daughters to be. I can't believe I was so wrong. I thought crime in N.O was bad, well this place has The Big Easy beat by a country mile! Crime is not only everywhere, it's extremely random in nature. No community is immune. Watching the nightly news is a frightening experience, yet you can't turn away for being amazed at all that's going on. Daily! Rapings, assaults, robberies, and HOME INVASIONS and murders are a daily occurence. Just yesterday, some guys broke into a man's home and shot him in front to his wife and child. The night before that, guys broke into a home and raped two women and the man who lived there was badly beaten. And I'm not exagerrating when I tell you that this happens on an almost daily basis! That combined with your everyday hit and runs, murders, rapes, and robberies. I feel like I've slipped into the rabbit's hole.
Besides the crime, folks here aren't as very friendly, there's no "life" here. There isn't much to do. There just isn't much to the place period...except for of the crime.
My husband and I signed a year's lease with the apartments that we've moved into (which are actually pretty nice--but that doesn't stop the fact that I can't sleep at nght worrying that someone is going to crash through our door in the middle of the night) We plan on leaving Charlotte AS SOON AS our lease is up!!
