Surviving Economically

The talk is today that the economy is a long way from recovering. On top of that the possibility of a depression like the one that occured in the 30's! Should we not be preparing some survival tactics? Where is the best place to live to survive the hard times that may come?
I've just recently left the Virgin Islands after 30 years. They depend mostly on tourism. The island is mainly rock so farming is limited. Everything is imported, therefore more expensive. Many businesses have gone under, crime is out of control, as it is in many places!
So here I am in West Palm Beach, Fl. all settled, working a retail position selling items that are not necessities. The area is also a tourist spot, nice, fun, clean. Cost of living is managable. I haven't been able to locate any local community gardens or farms. The earth is sandy and may not be suitable for farming. The sun is extremely hot during the summer months. A/C units run 24/7. That can't be good for the environment! Comming from island life, having windows and doors open all the time, enjoying the sea breeze is what I'm accustom to
Now I'm wondering did I choose the right place to reside? I'm feeling now that I should be in a state that has local farming, tight knit community where folks look out for each other work together etc. Comfortable year long climate, plantable land, clean air, allergy friendly. Now I'm considering the Carolinas, not too far from the coast, at the same time convienent to the fresh air of the mountains. Is anyone familiar with the Carolinas, South preferably?
