Review of Florida, Florida

YUK!!!!
Star Rating - 8/18/2012
I have lived in Florida for 27 years and I grow to detest it more and more every year. Let's start with the weather first...It's ALWAYS hot here. You WILL NOT get the 4 season effect here. Many of you are probably thinking "hmm, I could deal with tropical paradise weather year round" but when it's Thanksgiving and Christmas and your siting around with the AC cranking and it's to hot to put up your tree or to cook a nice holiday meal for your family, you will think twice about it. Maybe if your as sick of snow as I am of constant hot weather, this place would be for you. Next...raising a culturally well rounded child here is really hard as there is little to no culture. Museums and good plays are sparse and there is really nothing to do in most areas unless your visiting Orlando (home of Mickey Mouse) or going to the beach, which got really old for me around the second decade I was here. Actually, come to think of it, Florida has some of the most polluted beaches in the country...right up there with New Jersey beaches (Google it!!), so I wouldn't want to get in the water here anymore anyhow. And let's not forget about the cost of living, which is ridiculously high and the fact that there are no jobs for any of the locals (probably explains why the crime rate is so high!). The only people who can actually live comfortably here are northerners who work up north for 20-30 years and then come down here and live off their pensions (which by the way is part of what screws up our economy here!!!). If I had it my way, it would be NO NORTHERNERS ALLOWED!! They mess up the cost of living, cause traffic jams, create long lines, take our Dr appts and Hair appts in the winter and are in general, just a giant pain-in -the-you-know-what!! If living in a state infested with snakes, mosquitoes, lizards, hot humid weather and old people sounds fun to you, then this is the place for you. I'd trade places with someone who lives ANYWHERE else in a flat second.

@Beth! You make me laugh! First you dog Florida as if anyone really believes that you live all those years there and are unhappy! After you say how miserable you are, you go on to say "No Northerners allowed"! LOL. Sounds to me like someone who wants to keep the tropical sunshine all to herself but doesn't want to compete with a well educated northerner! Funny. I'm from New York and I will be finishing my Masters in International Business and I plan to move to, you guessed it, FLORIDA! The secret has been out for a long time! I lived there as a child and went there on my honeymoon. If you want 4 seasons in Buffalo New York with long depressing winters and truly nothing to do, I will see you in passing north as I go south to Florida! Nice try but New York education is valued down south and I'm doing whats best for my family. "No northerners"? Why do you care if you hate the place and want to leave? Your either miserable for all those years and too insane to change your circumstances, or your lying. I say your lying. Toodooloo.

You have got to be kidding right? Ok let me break this down for you. You hate Florida because it's so beautiful and Tropical and there's so much to do that you want NO Northerners?!!! LOL. Funny.

@ Ramon lol - my husband and I grew up in SE Florida and can't wait to get out. It's changed so much - and btw it is HOT AS HELL during the summer. When we go up north during the summer it feels like winter. You can't feel exactly where the sun is on your skin. I think when Beth says negative stuff about the northerners she is referring to the snowbirds. You have no idea how crowded and overpopulated it gets during the winter months. Our roads can't handle it! We learned every back road we could because the traffic gets so congested. Then (in our area) we have SOOOOOOOO many old people. We are in our 20s - and we refer to someone as young when they are in their 50s. We hardly see people our own age. They drive SO SLOW - like 20 mph and drift all over the place because they probably shouldn't be driving anymore. Then mix that in with NYers who have made this area little new york and drive so wrecklessly that you have to be on guard every second you are driving. You will see one or more accident when driving on the road a day - guaranteed. The cost of living down here is so high it is ridiculous - people say states like MD are expensive but the cost of our moderate apartment compares to the richer counties in MD. Our car insurance rates are TERRIBLE - some of the worst in the country. There is so much fraud occuring with the no fault policy. Even people purposely causing accidents because it is so easy to take advantage of. Many of the snowbirds down here are so selfish, arrogant, so rude, whiney, picky, it's terrible. We have worked in the customer service industry and every year that passes it is becoming so hard to fake smiling because they are ridiculous. There are so many swindlers down here - doctors that come here because they know they can try to take advantage of the old people, crooks. And like M said - depending on the area (I am close to one) there is such a nasty materialistic culture. So many people who would shoot their best friend for a buck - driving in their bentleys, mercedes, with name brand well everything on. (I mean gucci type of name brand.) The schools are terrible down here and receive no funding. I have no idea how we turned out like we did - I guess our parents. And good luck getting a job down here - there is hardly any industry down here. That's exactly why we are moving at the end of the year once we graduate from college - because there are no jobs. It's great if you work in hospitality (which is what we have been doing). And btw - You'll feel at home if you go to SE fl which I don't believe you are) because the NY plates outnumber FL plates. I've seen it on many days. Then the half of the year the snowbirds are gone it is so hot and miserable you will forgot what it is like to be cool while your AC pounds on all day (which you have to pay for) if you want it to stay even 78 in your house.
