Livermore, California

I really love living in Livermore. It has a small-town feel and a unique personality derived in part from a diverse population that includes cowboys and physicists who not only live side by side but are sometimes the same person. Livermore has a thriving art community and a new wine-growing identity. It has lots of educational opportunities, with a junior college in town, two state universities nearby, and satellite campuses of UC campuses and several other institutions also nearby. The drawbacks are the high summer temperatures, the high cost of housing, and the smog (the valley that makes the city so charming also traps smog). I am looking for somewhere less expensive to live when I fully retire, but I find I want a place that still has the elements I love about Livermore.
