Crime numbers in our area

Although the ratings show a high crime rate in my area, I don't see this in actuality. Our Neighborhood is on the Edge of NH and borders Tyngsboro and Dracut Mass. I have no problem with leaving the doors of the house unlocked at night, our neighborhood self polices and I can only remember one incident in the past 11 yrs that I have lived there of any reported problems and that was a domestic problem which was handled very quickly by the local police.
Sometimes numbers scare people off but I woulde recomend our neighborhood to anybody.
