Lynchburg VA

We moved to Lynchburg from Olney, Maryland (a suburb of Washington D.C.). The good: no traffic, incredibly affordable (you can buy a very nice house in the $200K - $225K range), good healthcare available, great four seasons (but not a heavy winter) and in a beautiful setting near the Blue Ridge Mountains. The bad: There is a very tight community of old-time money here. My first impression was that Lynchburg was very cliquey, almost like high school! Strong influence of the religious right due to Jerry Falwell's presence here with Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University. It is definitely a conservative community. Our son goes to an excellent elementary school, but the overall school system is hit or miss. We were shocked to find out that Lynchburg has the second highest drop out rate in Virginia. If you have never lived in the South before (like me), Lynchburg can be a shock to the system.
