Not my cup of tea

I could see why Omaha would be a good place if you are looking for somewhere non-threatning to raise your family. However, I am ready to move on after 5 years. I've done everything there is to do here a thousand times over and I'm ready for a beach, a warmer climate or a mountain range. I'm a big outdoors girl and Nebraska in general stinks in that area. Omaha is kind of a big sprawling area with lots of strip malls and cookie-cutter houses. Downtown is okay, but gets old quickly. Some of the midtown areas have nice little communities of progressive thinking, but Omaha is overwhelmingly a conservative, Republican city. People say Omaha has a nice business climate, but the facts are most of these industries are call-center type jobs with little room for growth. Unless you get a big job at ConAgra, Mutual of Omaha, Union Pacific or Kiewit, it's kind of hard to keep moving forward. A lot of things in Omaha seem contrived, they have a thinking of "build it or add it" to the city. I personally find they are adding way too many new shopping centers and apartments for the size of the city. Yes, cost of living is low, traffic isn't a problem and there are things to do, but other places have that too. Nothing really blew me away. Even the zoo isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be, though it is good. If you want a place to raise a family and safety, Omaha isn't a bad place to go. For young singles though, it absolutely sucks. I saw the same creeps night after night at the hang outs. It made me realize how small of a medium city it really is. I'm looking at either Austin, Texas, somewhere in Colorado or Southern California for my next move, and I can't wait.
