Review of Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix area is the pits - stay away!
Star Rating - 10/17/2011
I have finally woken up and decided to move back to the Chicago area, and it's about to become freezing every day starting next month. I've lived here for over 11 years because I hate cold weather and now I can't wait to get back to it. It's gotten worse here in every single respect. Every so-called urban improvement here is a huge money making scam. If you've ever seen Logan's Run, this is exactly what downtown Phoenix feels like - if you're over 30, you will be routinely ignored or stared down like you come from outer space. They renamed it "central Phoenix" just so it sounds more appealing to the Facebook and Twitter crowds! People over 40 are the only half normal ones, and that's assuming they come from somewhere else. The Arizona natives are the most flaky, non committal, conceited, insolent, arrogant, selfish egocentric, dishonest and amoral people I've ever met in my 41 years. It's all about looks and how ripped your waist line and how fat your wallet is from your gigantic trust fund. Most people I have met in or from LA are way more down to earth, humble and respectful than in the Phoenix area. I can go on and on. Tailgating is at epidemic levels. Schools are bad, people are always rushed and giving you dirty looks. they nearly push you out of the way at the FEW malls they have in town. Yes, there are too few malls and here is proof: Every one of them is filled to capacity during the holiday shopping season. I grew up in Chicago and never have seen anything like it! Anyway, kudos to the negative reviewers because they all have contributed more wisdom to this board. Oh by the way, it is 13th largest metro area, so the "5th largest city" is only counting Phoenix city limits, not the suburbs. So that is just another scam. Search it in wikipedia if you don't believe me!

I have to agree! I moved here from NYC and I too experienced a culture shock! or in other words, a lack of culture shock if I can call it that! Coming from a multi-ethnic melting pot like NYC, I have never seen so much white trash in my life! It doesn't stop at the lower income levels either! Whether you're a transplant or an Arizona native, there's not much to the gene pool that exists here in the Phoenix metro area! The weather and scenery is breathtaking (except when it's hot as the pits of hell) but, it's the people that are the killjoy... Driving here is a "take your life into your own hands" everyday evolution as it seems people here are just a bit or extremely "off"... Can't say that living here is in the long-term as I am already planning to move elsewhere! Don't want to end up growing old and looking like Governor Janet Brewer....SCARY! The State is broke, illegal aliens are taking over and we the law abiding citizen are footing the bill! Be afraid, be very afraid!!!

Moving to Arizona can be a real culture shock for many as the culture in arizona is tied to drinking, immaturity, lifted trucks and simply scrappin' by. Many people you meet in phoenix are fake, conceited, unsociable, and incredibly uneducated. And, worst of all, are the clueless co-workers. So often I wonder if people in Phoenix strive to act like some brain dead monkey, or if it's just a natural phenomenon. It's just this lazyness, that you find out here, as well as this selfish, "I'm too important to help you out" kind of attitude. So what is going on in Arizona? people like to drink alcohol and shout across family restaurants. By the way, the restaurants in phoenix are horrible. Sure there are a few that are safe, but be ready to deal with inadequate service with this attitude of, "don't make me go out of my way to make you happy." Lastly, these are observations I have continually and relentlessly seen in Phoenix. And, so many times I ask myself, "are these people even for real?"

Really great points, Dave. Phoenix is the pits for sure, and there are so many reasons to hate it here. I'm working on leaving Arizona myself, but for now I just try to live in denial of the fact I live in a desert.

Most people from the east coast and midwest "get it". It's people that move from Nebraska or Wisconsin or some other dust bowl state that think Phoenix is a "real" city. Yes Jon, you are right that people here have a big problem with providing anyone customer service or making the slightest sacrifice to anyone. They pretend to be customer service oriented here until they realize you won't hand them a huge check or lots of money. My friend and I came up with a phrase to describe it - friendly and helpful until they are inconvenienced. Even Claudius is subject to how they behave and repeats one of their defensive and meaningless surface level niceties they use in rote. "I am sorry you are not happy"?!? No you aren't! You don't even know me. Does it occur to more than a few people in the Phoenix area that caring and compassion means getting close to others and taking risks? In reality you're glad I'm out of your state and not acting like a "be positive" robot. Another rote defense mechanism, and when they say that they mean "bringing down my good mood and reminding me of stark reality". Positivity and egocentricity do not replace a vibrant culture or true diversity or an established urban environment that actually invests in a community for the LONG TERM. Phoenix is none of these. I can assure you that many people who live in Phoenix come from a very rural background, and have no idea what a genuine urban center is all about.

Quick geography lesson: Wisconsin is in the Midwest, not the Dust Bowl region.
