Elizabeth, I also am going to say that's funny, but not agreeing with you. Maybe you grew up here, but obviously your facts are outdated and you don't know much about the city. The public school system of the Greater Pittsburgh Area is hailed as one of the best in the country. With programs like Upper St. Clair, and Mt. Lebanon that consistently rank within the top public schools in the country the public school system is not a joke, its actually quite impressive. I recently spoke with a co worker that recently moved to North Allegheny from Florida and her children, both of which had nearly straight A GPA's in their Florida schools, had to attend Sylvin Learning Center for a few months just to catch up to their class.
Also, I'm not sure where you got your information from that all the businesses are up and leaving Pittsburgh, but that is actually quite far from true. I'm not sure if you've heard of it, but there is a small hospital called UPMC that is based in Pittsburgh. It is currently the leading transplant center in the world and one of the top cancer centers in the country. Hailed by many magazines as the best hospital in the country, not only is it the second largest employer in PA next to Wal-Mart, but its also top 10 on the east coast. Pittsburgh is also 9th in the nation on Forbes' list of big and small business which is based on the Forbes 400 and Forbes 200 and not even done taking population into account. Just because Mellon merged with Bank of New York doesn't mean that Heinz, US Steel, 84 Lumber, Alcoa, Allegheny Technologies or any of the 12 Fortuen 500 companies based here are leaving.
True us Pittsburghers are a little overboard with sports sometimes, but sorry that we have an identity that dates back a very long time. Seeing as the first professional football game was played in Latrobe and Pittsburgh remains one of the hottest recruiting areas for football to this day, we should be supporting the atheletes that we helped breed.
Another area of the city that is you seemed to have overlooked is the Cultural District which competes with some of the top performing arts centers in the country. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra which is world reknowned and has one of the most respected conductors in the industry, Marvin Hamlisch ( an multiple Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony Award Winner) is a solid foundation for the cultural aspect of the city. The Carnegie Museums are some of the largest and contain some of the best
