The Burg

It's a good city if you are married, conservative,or are raising a family. The people are very nice generally. It is much more of a "married city" than a "singles city".
It an older city with a substantial over the age of 65 population giving it a more provincial flavor. For example an inter-racial couple still gets double takes on city streets. The same would be true for a gay couple holding hands or with their arms around one another. The economy lags behind the rest of the country. A dearth of professional jobs. Younger and middle aged tax payors are moving away. Reasonable housing prices. Very high taxes especially the real estate tax. Lower rate of single people. Higher ratio of single straight females vs. single males-great for male singles! Bad for female singles. Fragemented government too many layers of government and beuracracy resulting in unresponsive government with high taxes.
Great culture-world class symphony, great museums, good ballet, good theatre. Good for sports enthusiats- Pro hockey, football, and baseball teams. Although the baseball team is a perennial loser. Good colleges and Universities- Pitt, CMU,Duquesne etc. Unfortunately, most of those who graduate leave the area due to poor job opportunities. The area appears to be in decline due to the collapse of the Steel manufactuing economy during the 1980's. The area has never totally rebounded. The weather is not great- humid, cloudy with a lot of rain and only 59 of so sunny days a year. It was a great place to raise my children but now that they are grown- I am long gone- I booked it to sunny, more progressive, growing, lower taxes Denver and did not regret it. The burg is now only a place I will visit. I will not live there again.
